The Real Season I Started Eating Vegan! #170

in happierpeople •  7 years ago

Would you let me tell you the story that converted me to eating vegan because this might help you avoid an amazing amount of bad moods if you're a little bit like me?

The real reason I started eating vegan!

What do I mean by eating vegan?

This is what I eat every four days. This is a smoothie, I drink this and it contains the following.

This is about a kilogram or two pounds of apples, grapes and strawberries.

Then I've got four pineapples. I've got two entire tubs of baby kale and spinach. I've got a bag of broccoli and a bag of Brussels sprouts.

This is half of a five pound bag of carrots and a tub of watermelon. I'll probably throw in a banana and some mandarins in there as well.

This is what I eat.

Every four days I break it down into a smoothie right here.

I'll have a quarter of this every four days and it takes two of these big cups full every day. I already had one today, I'm hyped up and I am energized right now.

How did I end up eating this way?

Is it because eating vegan is one of the best things I can do in terms of making an impact on poverty and on having a positive influence on the environment?

No, that's not what got me started eating vegan.

Is it because of the morality of killing animals or some religion?

No, that didn't get me going on eating vegan either.

I used to eat complete trash, the standard American diet and I wasn't interested in changing until this one little thing happened.

I was at the Detroit Metro Airport, I stopped for a meal, breakfast. I was in a really good mood, in other words, it was a normal day. I was in a great mood. I was enjoying life and guess what?

I ordered something that had three to five different kinds of meat, all kinds of animal product in it. It was extremely filling. When I walked out of the restaurant, within a few steps of leaving the restaurant, my very happy, on top of the world, feeling good mood turned into suicidal depression in just minutes.

Never mind that my wife and daughter were there, never mind that nothing had changed, that there was no problem. The mood went completely downhill. I'm an alcoholic, I go to meetings every day and I'm grateful for three years of sobriety. Guess what I was thinking about?

A year ago after I was eating that meal and finished with it, I was looking around the airport at like ten o'clock in the morning or maybe eleven or noon, thinking about a drink because, I felt so bad, I wanted to numb the pain of it. Then I was remembering, "Well, I'm alcoholic, I can't drink maybe, suicide will fix the problem."

Now, a lot of us like to put this into all of these extremely complicated medical problems like, "Oh my God, Jerry, you have depression, you blah, blah, blah." It's actually really simple and I've seen the evidence first hand as I've switched my diet to eating these vegan foods, those moods almost never come up anymore.

Now, sure, occasionally, something does happen, but those moods used to come up for me all the time. Thank God I didn't go get help and get on some medication. Thank God I realized what I just did that caused what immediately happened afterwards.

Now, the exact way this comes about in all of our lives is likely to be unique. You might eat the same kind of meal and you might not think about drinking liquor and killing yourself. You might just think, "God, the world really sucks or I'm just so fat and disgusting." Whatever your own shame thoughts are, the form of those may be different. For me, that's exactly what my thoughts looked like. Then I realized, "Oh my God, what I ate just did that to me and if I eat different, then I don't have to feel this way."

That selfish motivation is what motivated me to make this switch. I've heard some people say, "Man, you're so amazing, inspiring."

I'm just selfish!

I don't want to feel bad. I don't want to hurt. I don't want to be depressed. I don't want to think about killing myself. I don't want to think about killing other people. I also don't watch things like crime shows anymore whatever the newest show is people are into, I don't watch that because, that also contributes.

One of the number one factors I've personally found for me in depression and also in things like anxiety, and also in terms of my personal energy is what I eat.

That's why I eat this way today because not only does it minimize the bad moods, it maximizes the good moods.

Do you know why I am so hyped up and energized right now?

Guess what I ate?

That’s what I ate.

That's why I'm so energized and hyped up.

I've also had one cup of ground up Matcha tea.

I also had some of this Teaki Hut instant black tea powder.

That's what I've had this morning. That naturally hypes me up to an incredible amount.

Thank you if you've asked, "Jerry, how do you have so much energy and enthusiasm?"

What I eat and put in my body has a huge impact. The only reason is though because I've learned so many times by doing it the other way, I've had hundreds if not thousands of hangovers days sick throwing up. I have poisoned my body so many times that I don't want that anymore.

I want to feel good all the time because if I feel good all the time, I'm a better husband, I'm a better father, I'm a better family member, I'm a better friend, I'm a better YouTuber, I'm a better blogger with Steem. I do better in all areas of my life when I feel better, and so do the rest of us. I eat this way because it makes me feel really good, better than alcohol, better than drugs.

Now, to be fair, I've only smoked marijuana and I haven't done a whole lot of drugs, so full disclosure. Your results may differ slightly, but I think the point is the same. I eat this way because it leaves me feeling really good all the time.

Here's a great example, I've been sick recently with a little cold. This smoothie that I eat which is filled with fruit and vegetable is so effective at making me feel good, that if I'm sick I can count on feeling the best I feel all day within about an hour or two of having that smoothie.

It works so well that when it wears off, I go back to feeling normal and sick, but for a couple of hours, it works way better than cold medicine. It works way better than taking something to numb the pain because it actually does a lot of good in the body.

You see, our bodies communicate with us by feelings. If you do something your body doesn't like, like have a whole bunch of liquor drinks, maybe 20 or 30 liquor drinks and you wake up the next day with a god awful hangover, that's my body's way of saying, "Stop that."

But it can't say, "Stop that." What it can do is say, "Here you go, you're going to feel miserable." This is the body trying to tell you to stop that. What I've learned is that when I eat and I feel awful, that's my body saying, "Stop that."

That makes it so I'm not craving all these things I used to eat. I'm not craving the diet I used to eat. I don't miss the diet I used to eat all the time because I realize I could go right now and go get whatever I want to eat. The question is, how do I want to feel?

I eat this stuff because I want to feel good. I want to feel good all day, every day and you can say that's selfish, you could say that's good for other people. I hope this is really useful for you because this has been one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

Yes, it's been an unpleasant change. I show you what I eat because figuring this out took me a while. These exact things are really powerful, grapes, strawberries, apples. What I do is, I get this from Publix and I have half of each of these every day.

This is about whatever that is, two pounds and this is already cut up so it's very fast to blend. I put half of one of these in each day. I put a whole pineapple in each day. I put half of one of these in each day and then I put a quarter of each of these bags in. I put an eight of a five-pound bag of carrots in.

Then I put a little extra fruit like watermelon, banana, and mandarins, I change it up a little bit.

Then other than that, I have mainly hummus, whole grains, like if I got some Triscuits around here. I love these Hint of Salt Triscuits right here.

These are my whole grains fix.

Then I often have peanut butter for protein and fat.

Then I'll have homemade hummus.

I eat this almost every single day.

I eat like a robot now, because it is like putting gas in my car. I want to feel the very best all day, every day. I feel free. If I want to have a piece of cake, if I want to go eat a hamburger, I can do that, but I don't, because I don't want to feel bad. I want to feel good.

All this switch, all this little switch takes, that's all the motivation you need. I'm grateful I've a family member asked: "Man, how do you do this? I couldn't just do that."

All of us can very easily change when we see that we'll feel better doing it. It's this fear that we'll feel worse doing something. It's a fear we'll lose ourselves and we'll be someone else, that blocks us. All you need to do is see that your life will be better doing it that way and that's motivation.

And think is great what you did, especially knowing how bad the average american diet is.But at the same time a careful balanced diet with all the main groups in it I believe is what we are made for. Vegan can be a problem if it becomes an obsetion. But I'm very glad is working for you

So you are keeping a balanced diet to have some good blogs? :D @jerrybanfield

Yo ,
Very interesting read, Thanks you for sharing it!

That's an amazing story. Just decided co-incidentally that I'll eat more fruit and vegetables as the winter will come faster than we know. I love both these so it will be easy. My grandkids already eat well and with lots of fruit and veg and they have energy. You are amazing and well done! I'm already following you.

Good stuff, Thats dedication not eating meats!

Hello Jerry, looks like your heading in the right direction with your Health. Best to eat organic, no brainer.
Please look into Dr. Robert Morses recommendation for humans to eat fruits. https://www.drmorsesherbalhealthclub.com/

ps: If you are having gas on days of drinking your smoothie; consider not mixing your fruits together.

"Real Season I Started Eating Vegan"

It's Autumn, isn't it?

I bet it's Autumn.

=)

Connecting the dots between food and mood is something many still don't get. Not to mention the chemicals that go into animal feed AND in industrialized farms. The links to certain cancers and animal products cannot be ignored. Your reasons for being vegan may not be politically correct in some eyes but they are valid. Thanks for this post...

That's such a wonderful diet, I saw you talk about this in a youtube video saying how you had lost weight on the vegan diet. Hang in there and you will keep reaping the benefits. Meat and dairy is loaded with chemicals and hormones especially there in America. Wishing you all the best :)

In Africa especially Nigeria, we love to eat vegetables and fruits despite we eat meat and dairy food. This keeps us healthy. The vegetables and fruits we eat is more herbal medicine, we have a systematic way of preparing our vegetables and fruits which helps us stay healthy. Would be writing about it soon.

Nice! I found that in the states the vegetables cost a lot more than they do in the UK.

It seems like processed meats and dairy is really cheap compared to eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Nice post thought Jerry and good luck continuing your health food journey!

I think all person just need to try one month be a vegan and fell the difference ;)

It's not winter is it? :D

Edit: some context just in case my joke wasn't obvious ^_^

Im scrolling through wonderjng if anybody's going to tell @jerrybanfield that hes got a typo in the title while he can still fix it.

I hoped that he notice it by now, looks like he's busy.

Hi @jerrybanfield,

This was a great video to see. I voted for you as a witness a few days ago, because of all the positive things that you have done, doing and intend to do for Steemit and also because of all of the positive responses and comments regarding what you do and regarding you as a person. I feel Steemit massively benefits from folk like yourself and you're more than worthy of my support.

I've dropped all dairy products from my diet recently and have found that any foods heal and kee you healthy, as outlined in the Ayurvedic diet, but I am still at odds with clarified butter and use alternatives. But I wanted to mention something that I feel is as important as the points you have mentioned and it echoes the sentiment - gluten.

Gluten is such a heavy, indigestible ingredient and the effects are very similar to that of dairy and meat ingestion. My dietary mission of the news that I need to spread, if there is such a thing, is that of removing meat, dairy and gluten from diets, based on freash fruit, veg, nuts and pulses and to remove any chemicals, such as added fluoride from the water we drink, or to drink water that isn't tainted by modern chemicals, which are added for reasons of financial profit and not for health or considerate motives.

You are a mega-busy dude and as popular as well, which is excellent and a great example of how Steemit can help us all as we help each other to learn, grow, develop, teach and share with each other, but I am hoping that along the way, you'll have time, on occasion to share knowledge and information with each other and everybody else. It's not as difficult as people think, on a purely dietary level, but then we all excuse and have excuses for ourselves and they can be very comforting, especially when backed up by a lifetime of enforcement, either through habit, advertising or peer pressure from mass popular behaviour.

I really enjoyed your post and will Resteem it, as it resonates with my feelings towards food and health. Thank you for sharing this with us and for all the work that you have put intocreating it. It reflects very much in the pleasure that I have gained from reading it and I know you're here for good, so I will look forward to reading more quality posts like this and the work you do on here. I like the last post that you did about the lovely couple.

Anyway, I apologise for the length of reply, but I am a waffler and cannot thank folk enough for what they do, so I like to give a s much as I can - squeeze it in, so to speak.

All the best.

There are definitely many advantages to the vegan lifestyle. However, the largest challenge is making sure you ingest enough protein. Fortunately, there are many alternite protein methods.

I wrote a book about healthy living called A Healthier You. In addition, there is also a great list of superfoods that you can check out.

Thanks for the great article!

Great post, vegan is the best lifestyle to chose
I follow dr sebi teachings and I'm Alklaine vegan becuase not all vegan products are good for your body, most of them ar hybrid "man-made" foods.
We need to eat the food that God made not the man-made food. Thats why I follow dr sebi teachings, he cured Aids, cancer etc.. with just herbs.
Happy to see that you are vegan ;)

Thank you for the Dr. Sebi reference. Peace, blessings and good health to you.

You're welcome ;)

Great post, hopefully it will inspire at least 1-2 other people to go vegan :D Life is way better when eating what we actually are supposed to eat.

I do not think that the mood depends on what you eat ... if you drink alcohol or drugs will depend on that ... there is no doubt ... but to eat nothing better than the Argentine barbecue ... to your contrary if i not as at least once a week a roast I feel I'm missing something

Waw so many vegetables there :D

Nice :)

I used to feel that way and listening to comedy did the same trick for me. I quite like the idea of eating healthier but unfortunately it's not really an affordable lifestyle around here, healthy food costs five to ten folds more in our desert climate.

good food for the health of our body

I really don't agree with your choice :)

Of course, I would. This is always the first thing that my mind plays when I see Jerry's posts. And although I did not turn into a vegan, I can say that there is also a point in my life that I question why I'm still living. Believe it or not when you question your existence you're already half dead because according to research this is a suicidal's tendency. I'm happy that like Jerry I found something that changed/saved my life. I will not share what it is. Haha! Anyway, nice post Jerry! God bless to you and your family. :D

now that's something interesting about you jerry.
nice dedication towards not eating meat. I'm kind of encouraged and will think of having some vegan diet too...

When you monitor any vegan closely they all have that haunted dull look upon them.

i'm not very sure about that, but i do know living in Wisconsin what people who eat cheese and processed meats look like. they look obese.

I have a friend in London who`s a vegan with plenty of places for vegans to eat here. I sometimes go out with him to these vegan eat outs so he can socialise with other vegans. Maybe it is just London with not enough all year sun but people who are vegans seemed to have a dull skin complexion about them.

Its comments like these that make me miss the laughy face upvote from facebook. But that is the only thing I miss.

nice this post

Please try to have your own thoughts, at least.

People are vegans by nature!

I'm just selfish

This is like 90% of the so-called inspiring people out there. Just do what you like and do it because you like to and it makes you feel better.

yes, in the end people change only because they themselves want to

snacks.
i like to eat snack like

Interesting read. First non fruit loop vegan I've met lol I actually start getting irritable I I go with out eating meat for a while. So I guess in nature I must be an alpha male ;)
I'm glad you found your road to self peace congrats!

Hmmmm. i also want to eat vegan love it awesome

There is a lot of protein in vegetarian food. In this, your body is healthy. And you can stay healthy for a long time.

Awesome, I aspire to become vegan for many reasons, currently I eat as little meat as possible, and no beef or pork, mostly just eggs or turkey once a day. I also enjoy black tea because when I quit drinking alcohol I found myself drinking way too much coffee, which is natural to switch one addictive behavior for another. So now I enjoy various teas during the day for a balance and to keep an even keel.

So is Detroit food disgusting? there dope spots to grab fresh produce from all over. what's with the shaming, city on the rise, so we can talk it out of confusion.

Great decision buddy!

It's good for you, the animals and the planet as well. I've been living vegan for over 4 years now and I am very happy I did it. It was somehow strange at the start but as soon as you get used to it you can't imagine how ever lived any other way.

Congratulations!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Hey Jerry, I didn't know that you were vegan! That's awesome! I feel the same way, it's a great way to eat that not only benefits your own health but to the health of the planet as a whole... Most people don't realize how much of the problems we are facing today comes down to our dietary preferences. From our ecological problems to our leading causes of death... all can be linked back to the food choices we make. There's so much to benefit from eating fully plant-based I think it's the way we're supposed to actually eat contrary to popular opinion. I think the idea that we 'need' to eat meat, eggs or dairy for nutrition is a complete myth, and that all we need is available in the plant kingdom and that's what where we should optimally be getting it from. Let your food be your medicine. Just because we've 'always' eaten meat(even though there's much more evidence of plant-based diets in historic times than one would imagine) doesn't mean it's the best way to thrive especially given the problems the world is facing. When slavery in existed it was acceptable for people to own other people as property. The same thing goes today, it's commonly held as legal, acceptable and necessary to raise and consume animals and animal products, but there's always that small group of people saying... hello... people... you know it ain't got to be this way? I know often vegans may come off as being preachy as food is a very touchy subject close to many peoples hearts, often people don't understand 'the harm' in eating meat, eggs or dairy but for those vegans - people who have had 'the privilege' of having their eyes opened to what is going on it becomes necessary to speak out because the victims in this whole scenario, don't have voices, and furthermore, we have victimized them(the animals) to such a great degree that we don't even consider them victims. Now just commodities. Most vegans will tell you veganism isn't really even that hard, because once you've truly seen a slice of the bigger picture, it's quite simple to make the switch and stay there. In fact most vegans, including myself are thrilled with it. There's never been a better time to do it and I am happy I did myself 3 years ago. Along with the alcohol as well which was shortly before going vegan. Anyways voting for you now! Keep up the good work Later

Interesting and inspiring story, really got me into thinking... Thank you for sharing!

I do not mind that people are vegans. I really love my fruit and veg but at the same time, a South-African vegetarian cannot exist. We have too much of a reliance on meat in our diets, especially goats and chickens.

Hi, I'm Venezuelan, I like your post. Can you give me your vote in my post? @jerrybanfield

Great choice! :)

I find this post to be amazingly powerful @jerrybanfield. Food as medicine is a dreadfully under-utilized concept. I too have struggled over the years with similar and the only thing that gives me any real long lasting relief is eating well and exercising to the best of my abilities.

Thank you for taking the time to make such a post and getting the concept/thought out there into the world.

I just voted for your witness... you are real MVP Jerry :)

@jerrybanfield Dear Jerry, We are looking for your answer on this article. :)
https://steemit.com/story/@crypto-genius/is-that-what-jerrybanfield-wanted-to-become-a-super-hero

I hope you won't mind answering it. Thanks !

Hi @jerrybanfield indeed what a post this is indeed on how you are feeding, perhaps i must say that i do agree with you that eating healthy really has a positive impact in our lifes or how you eat will surely impact your life either positive or negative,as for me i will definitely eat healthy because i have seen the positive impact in your story for real, lastly thank you sir for your post it's really wonderfull.

Hi Jerry,

It seems that the focus audio that I listened before hand reading this post, helped me to keep reading. I don't know if is the drink I just had made me perceive you writing under the influence of alcohol. You're super hyped. Sometimes that can be good but sometimes for me lead to making not very smart decisitions and hurt some people. I think it's good to have a good balance in everything that you do. Have a healthy life style. Eating home prepared food. I learned that vegetables contains lots of oxygen and liquids that our bodies need and I experience myself feeling very energised after having a shake of fruits.

I appreciate your effort of adding value to this community, albeit, I don't know why I feel that you're trying to much to get attention which I see it as a turn off. Shorter posts to the point will make me stay in love with your posts.

I hope you will stay feeling good and productive as far now.

Be blessed!

PS. I would be grateful to have you as a friend!

Hi Jerry! Just got started on Steemit today and looking for people with similar passions! And yes, since our whole system functions on chemicals and hormones, being aware of what we eat and how that influences our nervous system is sooo important. Thanks for emphasizing that, for all our fellow steem-members to remember :)

Interesting post! My reasons for being vegan are very different, but I am happy that you feel this way.

I believe we are what we eat. If we eat garbage then we fell and look like garbage. We don't eat anything processed. We eat lots of raw fruits and veggies. If we feel we must have protein, it comes from organic eggs (our chickens) or fish from our pond. No chemicals. No additives. We used to feel awful and depressed. Now we don't. Big difference? The food we chose to eat. Thanks for sharing this Jerry.

Wow! This ranks as one of the best posts I've ever read on Steemit.

Kudos to the person who pulled the pics together...Excellent work!

I look forward to seeing the video upload of this.

I have to admit a comment I made on your 'hyper' energy level had people who know you, and hold you in high regard, rallying to your defense as calm-natured and down-to-earth.

NOW, I see that your energy is holistically designed.

There's a saying, "You are what you eat." It becomes clear that addiction is at the root of many an unhealthy person who ingests alcohol and bad foods which makes them feel horrible.

So glad you are an example for positive change.

I know your family is grateful to God for your overall success.

Peace.

Good story and hilariously written!
Also started a while back on eating vegan and it felt super good.

Unfortunately now dependent on red cross food because my country is smashed so the choice isnt really there at this moment haha.

Looking forward to so clean veggies again!

good post

I can quit meat, but its hard to leave dairies and eggs.

Many vegetarian still eat eggs and dairy. Like kefir.

A healthy mind will cause healthy symptoms . :-)

I went vegan because I realized the trash I was eating. 2 years later, I feel amazing.

This is a really interesting post on how your diet contributes to your mood. It makes sense that the kind of things we put into our body would have an effect not just physically but mentally as well.

I wonder if it may vary from individuals - like maybe there are some people for whom eating meat quite regularly would actually improve their moods, whereas for others, it would be vegetarian or vegan-based diets.

I don't think I would become a vegetarian or vegan myself, but I've always thought that a lot of meals prepared from those diets look really tasty. Depression is such a horrible thing to go through, and if your veganism is helping fight it, that's great. I hope it continues to have that effect!
