The story of Tobit in the Bible is the story of an Israelite deported with his entire family to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire, after the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel. Like Job and King David, Tobit and his son, Tobiah, are tested by God before being blessed by the beatitude from above. The Book of Tobit is an uplifting book with a deep moral content on topics such as mercy (compassion, kindness, benevolence, gentleness), the love between father and son, and the sanctity of marriage.
The narration about Tobias' adventures to get married and recover a family property in a distant country with the help of the angel Raphael is a reminder that God is faithful with those who fear him and he does not forget his covenant.
And the Book of Tobit recounts in its ending, the song of praise of Tobit; this hymn that recalls the songs of the psalms and the teachings of the sapiential books is a recognition of the sovereignty of God in the universe, and the importance to men of worshiping God and be a faithful follower of the law.
This is how the Psalm begins, praising God and his glory:
"Give thanks to him, you Israelites, in the presence of the nations,
for though he has scattered you among them,
even there recount his greatness.
Exalt him before every living being,
because he is your Lord, and he is your God,
our Father and God forever and ever!" Tobit 13:3-4.
Then the song continues and remembers the sapiential teachings about the two paths and the two rewards:
"He will afflict you for your iniquities,
but will have mercy on all of you.
He will gather you from all the nations
among whom you have been scattered.
When you turn back to him with all your heart,
and with all your soul do what is right before him.
Then he will turn to you,
and will hide his face from you no longer" Tobit 13:5-6.
Finally, the Song ends by teaching that happiness and blessedness belong to the proximity to God and his wisdom:
"Happy are those who love you,
and happy are those who rejoice in your peace.
Happy to are all who grieve
over all your afflictions,
for they will rejoice over you
and behold all your joy forever" Tobit 13:13-14.
