Go with the flow.

It took me a few days to realize a fundamental way in which life on Maui differs from life in the Bay Area: everything you do (almost all of which is outdoors) is at the whim of massive and somewhat unpredictable flows of energy. The winds, the water currents, the surf, and the patterns of atmospheric moisture and rainfall dictate what activities will be delightful and what activities will be a painful slog.

If you read the patterns correctly and accept them, you can surf the energy flows and have an incredible time. If you have your heart set on one activity but it is against the flow of energy that day, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

"Go with the flow" is an utter cliche, but in this case it is very good advice. Over time, this environment likely sets up a different way of thinking about the world and how you interact with it.
