Wouldn't it be great to lose weight by drinking coffee? Well, drinking coffee is a huge part of The Bulletproof Diet. Not just any coffee though - bulletproof coffee! While it won't literally make you bulletproof, it's a lot healthier than most coffees sold in the US because it's not loaded with mycotoxins, or mold. Bulletproof coffee is the cornerstone of The Bulletproof Diet.
The Bulletproof Diet
The bulletproof diet is an upgrade from the basic ketogenic diet, which gets the body using fat as its primary energy source instead of glucose. Learn more about the difference between the bulletproof diet and other similar diets here. The bulletproof diet includes an upgraded coffee in the morning and then you only eat mold-free, high-fat foods within a 6 hour window. Ideally organic, of course.
Some do it for weight loss while others for peak performance. It's an anti-cancer diet too because there's very little carbs and sugars, and most cancers feed on sugar. Burning fat instead of carbs reduces hunger and food cravings too, making it easier to transition to a new diet. All you need to do is make a few small changes and it will make a big difference. And if you're already drinking coffee, you're halfway there!

Start with Saltwater in the Morning
One of the things that I learned from the book is that the body makes best use of salt in the morning. So he recommends starting the day by adding a teaspoon or so of sea salt to a glass of lukewarm water. That's pretty salty but you can do less. Dave Asprey recovered from adrenal fatigue by drinking saltwater in the morning like this. As with many other things, it's best to start slow and build up from there. Ultimately, listen to your body and find the right amount of salt intake that works for you.
Coffee, Lunch, & Dinner
After starting with salt water in the morning you have bulletproof coffee for breakfast, which should hold you over surprisingly long. Then you can only eat for about 6 hours after you eat your first meal. The key is to eat a lot of healthy fats for lunch and dinner, such as avocados, olives, olive oil, coconut oil and grass-fed butter. Grass-fed beef and pasture-raised eggs are also on top of the list. It's important that it's grass-fed because it will be higher in Omega-3s - healthy fat.
You can eat as much as you want within a 6 hour window. So if you count coffee as your first meal, and eat your second meal at 1 PM, you'd need to eat your dinner by 7 PM, or close to it. This gets your body fasting because you don't eat for 18 hours of the day and only eat 6 hours per day.
Buy the book!
It's worth it, especially if you're considering the diet. It's full of good information and bio-hacks to help you better understand why the diet is so beneficial. Though I was already drinking bulletproof coffee, it wasn't until I read the book and saw how much science is behind the diet that I start taking it very seriously. I quickly learned that Dave Asprey is a true bio-hacker.

Bulletproof Coffee
Most industrialized countries have high standards when it comes to testing coffee for mold. The US has no standards at all so most of the coffee that isn't moldy is sold to those places with higher standards. Therefore, most of the coffee Americans are drinking is pretty moldy. Yuck!
Unfortunately, moldy coffee interferes with the adrenal medulla, the part of the adrenal gland that burns fat. So it's important to drink bulletproof coffee or some other high quality coffee without mold.
Bulletproof coffee is lab tested, mold-free, and tastes delicious. Besides being made with upgraded coffee, we go one step further by adding fat to it. After feeling rejuvenated from a creamy cup of yak butter tea while 18,000 feet above sea level near Mt. Kailash in Tibet, author of The Bulletproof Diet, Dave Asprey, spent years figuring out why he felt so much better after drinking it. This was the genesis of what later became known as bulletproof coffee.
Asprey upgraded the drink even further by creating his own product that bio-hacks the body by getting it into ketosis in just one day instead of three. He calls it Brain Octane. In ketosis your body burns fat instead of storing it, which usually takes days of primarily eating fatty foods. Brain Octane is an extract of coconut oil concentrated with at least 10x the caprylic acid. Caprylic acid is largely attributed to coconut oil's health benefits. It's a medium-chain triglyceride (fat) that's a great source of energy for the brain too.
Designed for peak performance, Brain Octane oil gives instant energy to the brain without breaking down glucose from sugars or carbs. If you like coffee, you'll love it with Brain Octane! Just remember to start with just a teaspoon and slowly work your way up over a few days because the stuff is really concentrated. It can give you a belly ache if you have too much before your body gets used to using it.

My wife and I switched to bullet proof coffee a few months ago. While we don't follow the whole bulletproof diet, simply switching from our morning latte to a bulletproof coffee made a big difference. From our experience so far the bulletproof coffee provides a consistent energy rather than a huge caffeine spike, then crash.
Since we live in Canada the trademarked "Bulletproof coffee" and "Brain Octane" was hard to find and expensive. A bit of research revealed that brain octane is basically MCT or medium chain triglycerides, which is much easier to find at a health food store. Want an even easier substitution for "Brain Octane"? MCT is derived from coconut oil, this is what we use.

Yea, I haven't did the full on diet yet. But i intend to give it a try. I couldn't drink coffee before because it made me jittery. Now I drink it every day with no problem. I love it!
Though MCT oil is derived from coconut oil, MCT oil is concentrated. According to Dave Asprey, coconut oil doesn't do the same thing - get you into ketosis fast.

I agree, coconut oil does not initiate ketosis as fast as MCT so if that is the goal, MCT is the way to go.
