My Experience of Taking Cold Showers - Is It Worth Trying?

in health •  7 years ago  (edited)

Information

I have been taking cold showers for about a month now. Almost everyday. When I first started doing it, it was freezing cold. There was no way I did more than one or two minutes. I felt like the cold was controlling me. I felt no motivation before stepping into the shower. Now, I am looking forward to it. I feel like I can control my reactions when it gets really cold. I enjoy it. A cold shower for me is now lasting at least 4-5 minutes, and it dosn't feel that cold anymore.

@jerrybanfield wrote this post yesterday filled with honesty and inspiration. Jerry was talking about how we sometimes wake up in a shitty mood, and how Tim Ferris, and Andy Robbins are setting themself up for a productive and happy day through healthy morning routines. The post from Jerry inspired me to write this post and inspire more people to do cold showers.

Inspiration

When I am feeling bored, unmotivated or just a little bit sad, I jump into a cold shower. I will start off with hot water and gradually make it colder and colder. In the end it can't get any colder. Then you just stay in there for as long as you feel like.

Cold showers has many benefits. Mentally and physically. I am sure a cold shower is as healthy as shown above. For me, personally, the benefits I can agree upon are:

  • Instant boost of happiness afterwards.
  • It surely does alleviate depression, as @jerrybanfield wrote. I feel it every time I am a bit sad.
  • Increased circulation.
  • Improve sleep. I used to wake up during night. I don't do that anymore.
  • More energy. If I feel a bit tired and take a cold shower, I feel like I am ready to conquer the world.

Ignition

Cold showers are extremely powerful. They can change your day completely. I dare you to try it. Start off with hot water and then slowly make it colder. Just try it one time, and be honest with yourself. Be honest about how you feel after a hot shower, and after a cold one. Then you will see it yourself. You will feel it. It might feel horrible and cold as f*ck, but it's worth it!

I wrote a post and another one and some people did comment telling me they wanted to try it or was already doing it.

15 months? Wow! You're the champ! I will continue, because I have only felt positive things, as you have.

I've been experimenting with cold showers the past year. And I can agree that all the benefits you list above are true. Its been a game changer in my life. Also cold showers paired with intermittent fasting = Hugh Jackman from Logan. It makes you feel like a testosterone savage with 16 year old human growth hormone surging through your veigns.

I found cold showers through Wim Hof and urge everyone to research him. He has been exposing himself to extreme cold for most of his life and is now capable of some pretty superhuman stuff. Back in the day he climbed Everest in his shorts.

Yes I know. Have you heard the podcast he did with Joe Rogan? It's quite nice. Also have you tried doing some Wim Hof breathing exercise while you are doing a cold shower? That's amazing, especially if you hold your breath without air in your lungs!

Thanks for sharing! I will try this and see how I feel. It is interesting, because with Japanese bath you end by submerging into the hot tub.

Interesting. I feel a lot more energized after a cold one. After a hot one I feel lazy and not that good.

In a real hot spring(onsen), there are healthy minerals in the water and the idea is not to rinse afterwards as it would remove the minerals. But in standard homes it is just normal hot tap water and staying too long in the tub is not good. Probably cold showers are better but less pleasant, especially if there are no minerals around. :)

Cool! I subscribe!

Thanks!

Its really awesome, I've been doing it for about 3 weeks or so, its not that hard anymore. I can only say positive things about it so far, plus I am saving lots on power, my geyser is totally switched off in my house.

Very true. There is also the economical POV in this. It has so many benefits!
