I just had a stroke!

Thank God for speech to text as this is being written by it it even though my speech is slurred it is doing an excellent job. All my life up to this point I have spent a great deal of time researching health issues and how to prevent events as like just what happened to me. It is not giving me any comfort in this moment to recognize that I did not prevent this event. Even though my speech is slurred the text-to-speech feature is working excellently. My stroke took place in the right thalamus portion of the brain. my stroke event started about 3 a.m. in the morning with the residual damage showing up this morning. I can't believe how easily I get tired. At least I'm not struggling to put sentences together to deliver this message/warning..

They tell me my recovery will take about 6 months. being an impatient person anyway that is at least 6 months too long. Thank God I have a wife who loves me and is there for me every minute and has been for 48 years of marriage so far. I used to tell her that if as this (a stroke) ever happened just simply pin my War medals to my chest and drop me off at the nearest Veterans Administration Hospital. Although I can still do a few things for myself I need her help for dressing and we'll need it for yard I can no longer do. At this point I wish we had moved into a condominium. My son has offered to help with yard work so that is a relief. Thank goodness can still wipe my own tush.

I have no idea what the future holds for my recovery I'm very glad I have friends and family and wife to help me through it. The problem with my situation is that although I knew what to do health-wise I didn't do it. I think we are all a little bit that way in that we know what we should be eating and drinking but it is too much fun to do the opposite.

I had recently lost 45 lb and was able to get off a blood pressure medication, but I gained back 15 pounds of that loss and I was checking my blood pressure which had been increasing slowly. And then bang! Out of the blue I get a stroke. Surprise surprise!

It Is very frustrating when you tell your left hand to do something and it refuses to do so. I'm going to start using a walker to safely get around the house. As my recoveryunfolds I hope to share it with you step by step.

I wish you a speedy recovery matey - have you considered that a sexy young nurse may be required for bed-baths now - to give the wife a break you understand :)

Thank you for the well wishes, but I believe I will be able to bathe myself for the most part. Although the nurses at the hospital where quite attractive my wife of 48 years has been by my side through this whole event. And if anybody is going to bathe me it will be her.

Rest up, mate. Glad to hear you survived. Strokes don't mess around.

Thank you very much for the well wishes and thank God for text to speech!

good luck.

As you well know my friend luck has nothing to do with it, it is just going to be very hard work to get my life back but I'm sure will be accomplished with a little Help from my friends!

could be..but it seemed like the right thing to say.

I think I will be starting the recommended two glasses of wine with supper each night as well.

RED wine they claim.
but as far as I can recall that's for something else.
it's been determined that people who drink (moderately) live longer than people who don't.
I drink whisky in my coffee prior to going to bed.
(I drink coffee all day long)
Note: I'm not a doctor or a health practioner...I'm just a retired trucker.
you want some coffee? try a truckstop.
NASTY stuff....ummm. ummm. good.

Again, thank you!

By the way what about the coffee? I am taking a baby aspirin each day and will continue my normal coffee intake, but please let me know what it is about coffee that helps a stroke.

MASSIVE amounts of coffee...I'm talking several pots a day. STRONG coffee.
several studies have concluded that massive amounts of coffee over many years will prevent strokes, heart attacks, vascular diseases and what not.

Same thing for aspirin.
baby aspirin? piffle.
I take big boy aspirin. At minimium 2 a day..most times more.
and I've been drinking POTS of coffee every day since I joined the military in 1970.
usualy two or more...extra strong.
'some times i go for hours without drinking coffee...that's called SLEEP'

Thanks for the information!

Hello Chuck...sorry to hear about your stroke event. I am saddened to hear what happened to you. That is wonderful that you have a loving wife to be there to tend your needs. I'm sure she must be very sad about your stroke. I wish for you to get well and that God will be there for you and your wife to get this through. Stay strong and get well soon. Praying for you both.
