Indian gooseberry is also known as Amla in India and its scientific name is Phyllanthus emblica, is a gooseberry that certainly has most amount of nutrients in it, which helps to reduce the risk of many diseases. When it comes to benefits of eating this, there are numerous which gives a super long list. I used to eat it along with the mixture of salt and chilli powder to it, when I was a kid.
It Contains a Massive Amount of Vitamin C
The most important quantity of Indian gooseberry is highly rich in vitamin C. This vitamin is a water-soluble and need to be taken in a large quantity as it cannot be stored and cannot be generated by the body itself.
Indian gooseberry, or amla, is a rich source of natural vitamin C, with a concentration of 600 mg to 1800 mg of ascorbic acid in every 100 g. Fresh amla juice contains 20 times as much vitamin C as is present in orange juice. Heating or drying of fresh fruits or vegetables can cause the loss of most of the vitamin C present originally. However, amla is an exception as it contains substances that partially protect the vitamin from being destroyed during heating or drying. Source
It Contains Phytochemicals
This fruit has a maximum amount of phytochemicals, which helps to fight against free radicals that cause oxidative damage to cells which may also lead to promotion of many chronic diseases. These phytochemicals are obligated to promote health in a more positive way.
When an overload of free radicals cannot gradually be destroyed, their accumulation in the body generates a phenomenon called oxidative stress. This process plays a major part in the development of chronic and degenerative illness such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. The Amla also holds religious significance in indian vedic scriptures. They are often associated with the goddess of wealth Lakshmi. Religiously aware Hindus often have a Amla tree at home for prosperity.
It's always recommended most of the ayurvedic doctors in India and is really good to cleanse and clear your stomach.

What does amla taste like? Based on the vitamin C content, I'm assuming it's a bit tart?

According to wikipedia, they might not be the tastiest fruit around.
Quote from wiki article:
The taste of Indian emblic is sour, bitter and astringent, and it is quite fibrous.

I never ate them, just pasted the part about the taste from Wikipedia. It does sound interesting plant to grow, but I'm afraid it's just too tender for our cold winters.
Thank you for the follow up on the taste. I like sour fruits, not the super sweet ones. :)
