Let's start with something easy at first sight but when it comes to quality, ummmm I doubt we all do in the best way. Brushing our teeth is a simple routine - we wake up in the morning, going in the bathroom, get the toothbrush and the toothpaste and spend 3 minutes in front of the mirror, thinking about how busy our day is going to be and what our tasks for the day are. But have you ever thought: "Do I spend these 3 minutes of brushing in the best way or it's just a waste of time?".
The proper technique:
What most people do is they are using horizontal motion to brush their teeth. Now this in not recommended due to the negative effects on the gum and teeth. Gums can pull back and the process is well known as gum recession. The proper motion you should do is the rotating. This way you are pulling out the plaque that has gathered in cervix of the tooth and not causing any damage to your gum or cervix enamel (which is the thinnest enamel layer on your tooth).
1. Place the toothbrush at approximately 45 degrees angle against the gumline on the outer tooth surface.
-Maintain an angle of approx 45 degrees and do smooth rotating motions. Clean 2-3 teeth at a time, then another 2-3 and repeat.
2. Place the toothbrush at approximately 45 degrees angle against the gumline on the inner tooth surface.
-Repeat the movements from step 1.
3. Tilt the toothbrush vertically to brush behing the front teeth.
-Do several up and down movements.
4. Place the toothbrush over the chewing surface.
-Do several back and forth motions.
5. Finally you can clean your tongue surface using your toothbrush (some toothbrushes have special surface on the back just for this) or tongue cleaner.
In conclusion I would say: brush your teeth at least 2 times a day (after you wake up and before sleep); use soft hair toothbrushes; don't do horizontal motions when brushing the outer and inner surface; don't apply too much pressure and power while you are brushing; 2-3 minutes are pretty much enough for brushing your teeth. I personally stick to these tips (even though I use electric toothbrush - there is some difference) that I learned from my dentist, books and internet and I hope you liked my post on how to maintain oral hygiene. See you around and... stay tuned for more!
