Be Aware Of Gout Disease

In Indonesia people often mistakenly equate the disease with gout rheumatism. Though rheumatism is a general term used to describe pain in joints or muscles that have inflammation. While uric acid disease is a condition that can cause painful symptoms that are unbearable, swelling, and feeling hot in the joints.

Uric acid comes from foods that contain high purine, such as: 1. offal (kidney, liver, heart). 2. seafood (shellfish, mepiting, fish mackerel). 3. red meat (beef, goat and buffalo). 4. alcoholic drinks (beer, whiskey, and vodka). 5. sweet drinks (both artificial and natural sugar). 6. The body cells are damaged normally or due to illness.

Uric acid should be released by the body through feces and urine. It is also prone to people with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, or chronic kidney disease, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, proriasis, and metabolic syndrome.

Men are more prone to uric acid than women, especially when they are over 30 years of age. In women, the disease is usually at risk after menopause.

People affected by gout disease will usually feel the rapid development of symptoms within the first few hours. The pain can last for 3-10 days. Swelling not only occurs in the joints, but also the area around the joints accompanied by reddening skin tone. So it is not able to move freely.

Handling of gout disease has three main objectives:

  1. Enough rest during your uric acid attack. Raise your legs and avoid inflamed joints from impact.
  2. Relieve symptoms of gout, with painful joint compresses with ice for about twenty minutes. Do not stick ice directly to the skin as it may damage the skin. Consume painkillers.
  3. prevent the recurrence of uric acid attacks, with uric acid-lowering drugs (eg allopurinol) and away from foods that trigger gout disease and lose weight. Prioritize low-calorie foods to support efforts to gain ideal body weight.

The combination of medicines from doctors and healthy life behaviors generally proved effective in lowering uric acid levels and dissolving the sharp crystals that have been formed. With such a combination, it is expected that patients with gout disease no longer experience relapse.
Although gout disease rarely cause complications, but still we should be wary.

Some complications that may occur, including:

  • the appearance of a hard bump (tofi) around the aeea that is inflamed.
  • Damage to the permanent joint due to ongoing inflammation and tofi within the joint that damage the cartilage and joints itself. This permanent damage usually occurs in cases of uric acid disease that have been neglected for years.
  • Kidney stones caused by deposition of uric acid mixed with calcium in the kidney.

Some tests that can detect gout, namely:

  1. The joint fluid test, through a micryoscope, is usually found crystals of sodium urate in a sample of its synovial fluid to be sure.
  2. Ultrasound. to detect crystals of sodium veins within the joint or within the inner lining of the skin.
  3. Blood test to measure uric acid levels.
  4. X-rays are usually only used by doctors for the purpose of finding a disease other than gout.

Prevent recurrence of gout disease.

  • Reduce weight. Exercise adequately, avoid exercising that can put pressure on the inflamed joint. Should choose swimming sports because water can participate sustain weight so that the joints are not too under pressure.
  • Drinking water about 6-8 glasses of mineral water per day. In addition to avoiding dehydration, water can also facilitate uric acid removal through the urine so that the risk of crystalline formation becomes minimal.
  • Drug doctors. For patients who often relapse or patients who have been affected by complications.
  • Vitamin C is able to prevent disease
    uric acid by improving the performance of kidneys in removing uric acid in our body. The recommended dose of vitamin C is 500 milligrams per day.
