The other night we visited some friends. As usual, she packed out a few snacks before dinner. I was amazed when I saw a bowl full of ants. I laughed and asked her whether I could bring the snacks next time? She in turn said that eating ants was a big treat for her and she loved eating them. She offered me one which I greatly declined! Apparently, she keeps them frozen in plastic bags, and whenever she is in the mood, she takes out a bag of ants, fries them up with some coconut oil and enjoys them with a glass of wine.
According to some online research, I found the following information:
- There are many people from various countries that eat these little creatures (and even some other insects.)
- Ants are definitely edible. They have a sour taste and if you add salt, it could be a tasty salt and vinegar snack. (This is just weird!)
- Queen ants boost libido (It's a wonder we have any ants left?)
So is it really so weird?
This was a first for me, maybe because I have never had the urge to eat anything with 6 legs, but in countries like China bugs of all sorts are considered a delicacy and is often served like we serve peanuts.( I still prefer the latter)
Insects are very nutritious. More even than fish or meat. It is said that eating insects can truly benefit our health. If that is the case I would rather stay unhealthy! I prefer eating a piece of steak FAR MORE that eating an insect.
WHICH DO YOU PREFER?
If I ever have to revert to eating six-legged creatures, I would probably smother them in chocolate. Please watch the video below if you are in any way interested in trying out an Ants-burrito or some delicious chocolate covered ants.

I don't think I could face entire insects even dipped in chocolate. But I have eaten cricket flour. I think that could be a way of the future in countries not used to eating insects.

Hey giantbear, I'm sorry if this is rude or spammy but I'm writing a cookbook on this very topic, including chocolate-smothered insects. If you put roasted mealworms in chocolate, it tastes a lot like a Crunch bar. Just letting you know, in case you're interested. Follow me for more info, I'll be writing a lot on this topic.
