The kidneys are a pair of red-shaped organs and are closer to the spine than the stomach and under the rib cage. The normal size is between 8-14 centimeters weighing about 120 grams each. The size varies, depending on body size and abnormal size can be a marker of kidney problems. Approximately 1.440 liters of blood flows through the kidneys every day. Throughout the day the kidneys work hard without a sound cleansing the blood from toxins and unused substances from the metabolic system. Another important function of the kidneys is to maintain blood concentration by storing or discharging water in the blood. Bila tak memahami apa itu ginjal dan fungsinya, maka tak akan timbul rasa sayang kita pada organ kembar ini sehingga tak menyadari bila ada gejala sesuatu yang tak beres pada ginjal.
Ginjal juga disebut renal atau nefrologis dalam istilah medis, berasal dari "renes" dalam bahasa Latin yang berarti ginjal, sama dengan nephros yang juga berarti ginjal dalam bahasa Yunani. Nefrologi adalah spesialisasi dalam ilmu kedokteran yang berkaitan dengan penyakit ginjal dan orangnya disebut nefrolog.
Ginjal adalah sepasang organ berbentuk seperti kacang merah dan posisinya lebih dekat ke tulang belakang daripada ke perut dan berada di bawah sangkar rusuk. Ukuran normalnya antara 8-14 sentimeter dengan berat masing-masing sekitar 120 gram. Ukuran tersebut bervariasi, tergantung pada ukuran tubuh dan ukuran yang tidak normal bisa menjadi penanda adanya masalah pada ginjal. Sekitar 1.440 liter darah mengalir melalui ginjal setiap harinya. Sepanjang hari ginjal bekerja keras tanpa suara membersihkan darah dari racun dan zat-zat tak terpakai dari sistem metabolisme.
