Intentions and Processes

"Hello to you and welcome in 2018. Since I'm in Mexico right now, Feliz Año Nuevo. I hope that you're having a great day and that you are rocking this early 2018. I hope this is going to be your year on any plan that you might desire. I have more of an openness towards health so I wish you all the health that you need -- strong health, vibrant health -- and to be sustainable through the year and onward after that.

For the video of this week I want to touch two different concepts about goal settings for the year. I know this, either today if you're watching this on January 1st, or early on the year, then you have the goal settings, the resolutions, the planning of the year, of the month, etc. There's a lot of pressure on the beginning of the year because they say that what you create first thing in the year will follow you throughout the year. There's usually a lot of pressure associated with that process. I want to touch two points that might help you to relieve some of that pressure.

The first one is to focus more on intentions than to focus on resolutions. Resolutions, they're considered a little bit like goal settings, but it's more like "I'm going to get in shape this year" or "I'm going to do this" or "I'm going to do that". Usually what happens is that a high percentage, like 80, probably even 90% of the resolutions that are started on January 1st, by Valentine's Day they're not going anymore. They're not going anywhere. Usually within six weeks, a high percentage of the resolutions that were took in earlier that year, then within six weeks nobody's doing anything about it.

A really good example is the gym industry and the fitness industry. In January they usually make or break their year. They can take on so many memberships, but they know that most of those memberships, unfortunately, will not be used throughout the year.

So it's an important time to focus on what you really want.

But what I'm suggesting to you is instead of taking resolutions with a specific goal -- the specific goals are important, obviously: you need to have a vision, you need to have an orientation, a main direction where you're going. But instead of resolutions with a goal that is numbered or a goal that is a specific end date or something like that, something that is super specific, and then you gauge your success how close you come to that goal, I suggest that you go with intentions and feelings.

How do you want to feel this year? How do you want the intention that you project into the year?

The difference is with the resolutions or the goal setting, you're going towards a very specific goal sometime during the year. With intentions and feelings, you're sharing or you choose to vibrate to a certain level wherever this brings you. Let's say, for me, for 2018 -- I'm going to retouch it in the second point because it has to do with the second point -- for me, one of my intention, there's no specific goal attached to it but one of my main intention is to be more consistent and more loving and more grateful. There's no specific goals attached to that, but I am focusing right now and I am creating who I want to be and how I want to feel throughout the year.

To be more grateful, it could be in any type of project or endeavor or situation. I can be grateful anytime during the year. But for me, I create the intention, I set the intention to be grateful on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Without having a specific goal in mind, like it's not about being grateful 200 times during the year. It can be 50 times, it can be 200, it can be 5,000. But without the specific goal, I set the intention and how I want to feel so this can be an ongoing process that never ends. The way to gauge it or to measure how I am doing comes on a daily basis.

If I'm grateful once per day, every day of the year, that's a huge win. It's amazing. If I miss a day, that's not the end of the world. I'm not missing out on anything because it's only positives. Every time that I do it, it's a positive. When I don't do it, it's not a negative because I wasn't doing it that much before. Every time that I do it, it becomes a positive. That might help you relieve some of the pressure of saying, "I got to do certain things to get certain goals." Instead of that, choose how you want to feel and then, every time you feel like that in the year, it's a plus. It's a win right there.

The second point that I want to touch is, instead of focusing on outcomes, focus on processes. This is going to be a challenge for me this year because I'm always focusing on the outcome. All my professional life, I was trained to achieve results. I was trained in performance. Now to open myself up to say "I set my intentions in motion and I do my best every day whatever happens", it's a big twist for me in the way that I think. But it's really powerful and it relieves a lot of the pressure.

What it means, a little bit like I was saying for the first item, it's really that you do the goal setting and you do the resolutions and everything, and then you forget about them. You decide and you set up intentions or directions to go throughout the year to be more of this, to be more of that, and then you focus on the daily processes that are going to get you there, that are going to keep you on that track. Sooner or later, while being on the same track, sooner or later you will get to your goals and to your resolutions. But to focus on the daily processes to keep you in line with your intention, that's what I'm going to try, I'm going to do my best to do and to create and to set up throughout the whole year. We'll see how it goes.

I already feel that it relieves a lot of the pressure for me because it's a daily process. I'm only accountable in a daily way and I can readjust accordingly, super quickly, from one day to the other. Also, because I'm setting an intention, then every time that I nail it, then it's a positive. It's a win for me. I don't have to wait until the outcome or the objective.

I hope this serves you. Give it a try and let me know in the comments below how does that serve you, what do you think about that idea, if you're going to apply it or not. I'm going to do it. I'm jumping in 100%, intentions and processes instead of resolutions or goal settings and outcomes. Let's see how this goes this year. I hope this helps you. Again, sharing is caring. I send you all my best. Take care, namaste, and see you next week."
