occupational diseases are those chronic diseases that occur due to your work or occupation.

Occupational hazards like accidental fall or any injuries are not the occupational diseases.
These diseases may be due to physical, chemical, biological, environmental or psychological reasons.

In the history, first recognized occupational disease was squamous cell carcinoma of the scrotum identified in chimney sweep boys. And this was identified by sir Percival Pott in 1775.

Here are some most common occupational diseases.

Lung disease

Lung diseases are caused due to bad indoor air quality.
Some common lung diseases are-
Asbestosis among asbestos miners.
Black lung among coal miners
Silicosis among tunnel operators

Skin disease

Amongst top 5 occupational diseases.
Occur due to chemicals and wet hands for long period of time.
Most common- eczema
Others are- urticaria, sunburn, skin cancer etc..
Contact dermatitis is inflammation of skin results from contact with an irritant.
Common irritants are- detergent, acids, alkalies, oils etc.
Hand urticaria is common among the health care worker due to repeated wearing of gloves which causes reaction of the latex or nitrile present in the gloves.

Computer vision syndrome

Common among person using computer for long hours.

Lead poisoning

Common among people working in industries using lead or it's compounds.

Mental and behavioral disorders
Tennis elbow
Hearing loss
Asthma
Musculoskeletal disorders
Occupational cancer

We all should understand the risk factors of such diseases related to our occupation and do the needful preventive measures.
