“ The doctor in the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the causes of disease.”
-Thomas Edison
Staying healthy with nutrition starts when we are children. As we grow we require wholesome, nutrient dense foods, essentially a building diet. We use the extra nutrients in good quality oils and proteins to construct and expand tissue. After we have stopped growing in our late teens and early 20’s, we need to shift our eating to a maintenance style diet. We still require a nutrient rich diet but with a fewer calories and more fibre , and we need to add occasional seasons, of fasting or detoxifying. As we age further, our metabolism slows and sometimes our activity slows down as well. It is vital to make daily exercise an important goal to help to stay well.
In our modern world, the foods we eat now are not like the foods our grandparents ate. Our food chain has been altered dramatically with genetically modified foods. Foods are also sprayed with copious amounts of chemicals, and at times I really wonder what is actually in and on the food we are drinking and eating. Most of our supermarket shelves are packed with low-nutrient foods filled with additives, chemicals, and coated with highly dangerous pesticides and herbicides (just to name a few). We are bombarded with advertisements through radio, television and now social media (unless we live in a place where there is no radio contact). Our lifestyle today is faster, we are more stressed, and we are well and truly into technology like never before. We eat more takeaway foods for convenience than at any time in the past.
What is all this doing to us? It is destroying our bodies at an alarming rate. Our bodies are organic so it makes sense that we need organic food in order for it to be properly absorbed, assimilated and used within our body. There is less risk of ingesting chemicals when eating organic foods. I would highly recommend that you buy organic as often as you can.
A new study by Harvard University shows that even tiny, legally allowable amounts of a common pesticide class, organophosphates (OP’s), can have dramatic effects on brain chemistry. Organophosphate insecticides are among the most widely used pesticides in the U.S. and have long been known to be particularly toxic for children. This is the first study to examine their effects across a representative population with average levels of exposure. The study found that children with above- average pesticide exposures are twice as likely to have ADHD.
Many of us, very early in life, develop body shapes and specific eating habits. Family tradition and individual upbringing influence us greatly. Chronic obesity contributes to many major illnesses and disease patterns, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.
In my clinical practice, time and time again I have found that there is a growing appreciation of the role of diet in determining the level of health. Research increasingly indicates that certain diets and foods offer immediate therapeutic effects. Nutritional medicine serves as a foundation of naturopathic medicine.
The purpose of this Action # 1: Healing with Whole Foods is to introduce you to the growing field of nutritional medicine by focusing on nine key recommendations for a health promoting diet:

“Knowledge is the key. Open the door and explore the realms of your being. Yearn for more and learn your soul’s essence and manifest the life that you are meant to bring forth. Feeding yourself well, naturally, wholesomely, and in balance, will provide all the nutrients that you need to nourish your multi-dimensional self and the vital unfoldment of your path.”
