Does DHA help children to be smarter? P2

Substantial effect of DHA
A study by the Cochrane Collaboration (a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that studies systematic medical information with more than 37,000 members in more than 130 countries) concludes that there is no evidence Clearly DHA supplementation, or docosahexaenoic acid, the main nutrient found in fish and fish oils, will improve brain development in newborns, but there is no risk of supplementation. Add this nutrient. The US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality examines the effects of omega-3s in pregnancy and newborn babies, finding little evidence of the benefits of this nutrient.

Prof. Karen Simmer, a specialist in neonatal medicine at the University of Western Australia and coauthor of the Cochrane Review, said: "If someone says DHA supplement milk makes your baby more intelligent or has an index IQ is not the right statement. " The Cochrane Review combines data from 15 randomized controlled trials of nearly 1,900 infants, many of whom are monitored from birth to first few years. When the results are synthesized, there is no clear trend in the benefits of DHA in formula.

Other studies that focus on fish oil or DHA supplemented during pregnancy, as omega-3 is transfused to the developing fetus, show that supplements seem to increase the carrying time. Pregnancy is approximately two days and results in a slightly heavier infant, but this does not mean that the preterm birth rate will be reduced. Some studies have shown that when mothers supplement oily fish or omega-3s during pregnancy, their babies are less likely to develop eczema, food allergies or asthma, at least for the first few years of life. However, these studies are inconsistent. And as with milk powder, prenatal DHA supplements do not seem to make children smarter. That conclusion was confirmed in a recent randomized controlled trial published by JAMA Journal, which found no effects in prenatal DHA supplements on IQ of children at 7 years of age.
