Do Bras Really Help Breasts?

in health •  6 years ago

This is a topic outside of what I usually talk about, but it's related to health with respect to women, so I wanted to share the info for those who can gain value from it.

"Medically, physiologically, anatomically - breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra."

Source

That's the claim made by Jean-Denis Rouillon, a French Professor with a background in sports medicine. But these conclusions are preliminary and unpublished. They are also only conducted on your women. The effect of bras on older women might be different.

A ruler and caliper were used to measure changes in breast features of over 300 women over 15 years. Women ranged between 18 and 35 years old. The conclusion he came to was that women who never wore bras had a nipple height that was 7mm closer to their shoulders per year of non-wear compared to those who did wear bras.

He said that older women who have had children should not abandon their bras yet.

One women whole-heartedly agrees with Rouillon's conclusions, saying:

"There are multiple benefits (to being without a bra): I breathe more easily, I carry myself better, and I have less back pain."

Instead of bras helping to conserve the shape of breasts and prevent sagging, they might do the opposite.

For the data to be more representative of a population, there would need to be 300,000 participant sin the study, rather than the current 320 young women. But so far the data suggests young women who stop wearing bras will not have a deterioration in the orientation of their breasts, and also an improvement in the orientation of their breasts.

A former CEO of a bra maker contradicts these conclusions, saying:

"We have no evidence that wearing a bra could prevent sagging, because the breast itself is not muscle, so keeping it toned up is an impossibility.... There's no permanent effect on the breast from wearing a particular bra. The bra will give you the shape the bra's been designed to give while you're wearing it."

What is known for sure though, is that buying the improperly fitting bra can cause breast pain and discomfort.

"There's a social stigma about certain sizes; many women don't want to be seen as too small or too big and buy a bra that doesn't fit well in order to be what they consider to be a normal size."

Ligaments can be stretched beyond repair, causing breast damage that increases as the improper bra continues to be worn in life. Many women keep buying the same bras, and won't look at other types, possibly due to ignorance or embarrassment.

It might just be that many women have bad bra fits, and struggle to find the perfectly fitting bra. Wearing no bra alleviates the discomfort of back pain, chest compression, difficulty breathing and breast pain for many. Given that breasts come in all shapes and sizes, it might be too demanding for a manufacturers to create a perfect fitted bra for each woman. It may be that no bra is better than a bra, or it might be that a perfect fitting bra is the best.

I tried to find more research since 2013 about more conclusive evidence for bras, but I couldn't. It doesn't seem to be that much of an important field of research. I wanted to talk about this because it's interesting and affects the health, well-being and image of many women. I hope it's been as informative for you as it was for me.

I'm wondering if they need any more help w/the case study. Perhaps someone to do physical examination! ;) My g/f always said this was the truth. Not only do they sag more, but the ones that come w/a wire can restrict blood-flow unless they fit exactly right.

Yeah, logically there are self-evident problems with how it can negatively affect the breast.

Finding the right bra can be very time consuming and expensive. You have to measure yourself properly and then try on multiple bras to find the one that is right. Changing brands is also risky if you are ok with what you have. Buying the wrong bra can be an uncomfortable and somewhat costly mistake.

Yup, women have a lot more to take care of than men :/

Of course, bras do not do any good. Human breasts have not evolved to need bras. This is just big money pushing women into wearing useless clothes.

Quite true, bras didn't exist for a while. But that doesn't mean that large breasts don't stretch skin and sag after some time either...

Oh thats interesting. I lived all my life believing that wearing bra is better for the breasts shape. Now I can be free :)

This will fascinate a lot of women.

The findings do not surprise me. If God wanted women to wear bras he would have made them that way. And when man tries to perfect what God does man always comes up short... as in your research that suggest additional sagging with time. I think there was a time when the bra was used to bring discretion to the breasts. However in the past half-century I tend to think the bra has been used to draw attention rather than discretion. Thanks for the info. @krnel

So according to your logic we should just all be naked then?? I'm just being stupid :)

Great topic.

I have long wondered whether there is any form of correlation between wearing a bra and breast cancer - being that the breast is held unnaturally. I'm sure it wouldn't be the only cause though.

New, serious studies would be very good to see.

My ex was 38HH and needed to have her foundation garments custom made. They were expensive, but necessary.

She can literally tuck them into her waistband now, and if she's not wearing a bra, needs to, to protect innocent bystanders if she breaks into a run. Jogging is right out.

It was very uncomfortable for her to not wear a brassiere.

Fortunately for me, I can but relate what I have been witness to, or heard in complaint. Believe me, when it was time for a new $300 bra, I heard plenty. Her brassiere budget was more than my entire wardrobe. That being said, it was necessary, and I couldn't imagine her being able to physically function without solid and bespoke foundation garments.

Thanks!
