The lives of more people with strokes can be saved, a new technology revealed by a recent US medical study.
Strokes occur because blood clots prevent blood from reaching a member of the brain, depriving tissues of the oxygen necessary to continue functioning, leading to cell death within a short time.

The study says stroke patients can save their lives or prevent them from being paralyzed if doctors succeed in removing strokes that block blood circulation in the brain.

The most important finding in the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is that doctors usually have longer time than thought, in which brain cells can be saved by clotting.

According to a common medical agreement, brain cells can not withstand more than 6 hours without oxygen, but the new study says these cells can be saved within 16 hours of stroke.

Walter Kurochitz, director of the International Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes in Maryland, said in a statement published in The New York Times that "the results of this spectacular act will have a momentary effect on patients and will protect them from paralysis or death."
