Leprosy is a disease that can be infectious which causes severe disfiguring skin sore and nerve damage in skin are of the body. Leprosy have been known for ages and in ancient times, those who suffered this disease are deem an outcast in the society and it was thought in ancient times not to be curable. Leprosy is not as contagious as people think, one can only be infected if one is close repeatedly in contact with the nose and mouth droplets of an infected person and children are more prone to get leprosy than adults. Leprosy is caused by a bacteria known as Mycobacterium leprea (M.leprea).
Leprosy is curable and in the last 20 years, up to 16 million people have been cured and the type of leprosy one is suffering will depend on the kind of treatment the person gets. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides free treatment for all people with leprosy. Someone suffering from leprosy can be cured using Antibiotics, Antiinflammatory drugs and thalidomide. There are other type of treatment but all depends on the type of leprosy the patient is suffering from.
