Healing My Thyroid Part 7: Good Food Combos and Smoothies
If you’re just joining my thyroid-healing journey, I’ve been writing about how I’m trying to heal my thyroid through diet. I have several other posts that you might want to read for some background information on dealing with a weak immune system and / or an unhealthy thyroid (they’re listed at the end of this post).
It’s not mandatory to read these, but they do give background information about my path I’m taking to heal my thyroid naturally based on Anthony William’s book Medical Medium Thyroid Healing by Anthony William (FYI: that link is my Amazon affiliate link).
Good Food Combos
In his book, Medical Medium Thyroid Healing, William lists some food combos that work together to help your immune system and a compromised thyroid.
Instead of making a recipe or a drink from the book, you can use these combinations of foods that promote healing:
- tomatoes and spinach -- This combo strengthens the liver and flushes the lymphatic system. In addition, these foods strengthen the immune system.
- banana and dulse flakes -- These foods provide sodium, iodine, and potassium to help both the central nervous system and the endocrine system. (FYI: I had never heard of dulse flakes but they are a thyroid/immune system superfood. I found them at my local health food store. You can also get them online.)
- kale and mango -- These foods offer alkaloids and carotenes to enter the thyroid and help stop nodules and cysts from growing.
- pears and arugula -- This pairing (see what I did there? pairing... pearing...) protects the thyroid from shrinkage and atrophy.
- celery and dates -- The mineral salts in the celery combined with the good glucose in the dates acts as to powerfully restore adrenal function.
- cauliflower and apple -- This combo helps reduce inflammation, helps get new memory to the thyroid cells, and to teach the thyroid to be strong after you've been taking thyroid medication.
- wild blueberries and papaya -- This combo restores thyroid tissue after surgery to remove part of the thyroid or if it’s been killed off from radiation. This combo stops, reduces, and prevents thyroid tumors.
- tangerine and raspberries -- These fruits prevent calcium loss and help prevent osteoporosis.
Smoothies
This morning I decided to make a smoothie for a late morning snack. I used these ingredients: banana, blueberries, parsley, Greek yogurt, ice and water, kelp powder, dulse flakes, chia seeds, flax seed meal, peanut butter, and a little water.
It was good but a little thick. The chia seeds almost act like a thickener, so I need to remember to add more liquid next time I scoop in a spoonful of those bad boys.
I've made other smoothies, too. I use any of the foods that I used today or I look at the list of good for you foods in post 5 (link below).
One More Week Till My Next Blood Test
Next week I will get my blood work done again. I am really hoping that these 5 weeks of eating better have paid off.
Even if my TSH level is lowered a little, I’ll be happy! The healthy range is 0.5 to 4.5 (if I recall correctly), and mine was 7 last time they did my blood work.
I’m sort of nervous about this because this is the first real health issue I’ve ever had that would require me to take medicine on a daily basis. I’m generally healthy as a hog and want to stay that way.
I think I’ll wait to post again when I have my blood work results back. That will be a few weeks from now. Wish me luck!

My doctor was amazed at how healthy my blood tests were and couldn’t really understand how. Then I told her about Nascent Iodine

I will check it out. I've been using dulse flakes and kelp powder, both of which are supposed to contain good stuff for the thyroid. Eager to see what you have to say too! I do not want to take thyroid medication.

I don’t blame you. I hate having to take medication too. If you do decide to take Nascent Iodine, make sure you stop your thyroid medication first. Might have to check if you have to wean yourself off. Your thyroid can’t tell the difference between this stuff and the Iodine your thyroid produces. Sometimes I also take half a dropper full at lunchtime too. Usually that’s if someone with a flu or something has breathed on me and if I start feeling like I’m getting a sore throat I put the extra dose on my throat and a few hours later it’s no longer sore and I don’t get that flu. I’m the healthiest person I’ve ever come across and my last doctor was quite amazed at my blood tests. Her exact words were “you are incredibly healthy” and she seemed rather amazed. It’s certainly worth the investment as you save so much on dr visits and prescriptions and never need to take time off work.
