How Brain Waves and Meditation Affect Your Mind, Body and Health

There are many health benefits of meditation, and this has been supported by a growing body of scientific research. The beautiful thing about meditation is that anyone can meditate therefore, there is absolutely no reason why you should not start if you are not doing so already.  It may also help you to know that there is no particular way or formula to meditate.  You are free to do it your way, provided you follow the basic rules. What matters at the end of the day is whether you get the results or not.

Getting into your beta and alpha states have been shown to help you focus on your goals, improve your heart rate and make you more grounded.  It is a good opportunity to have some time from your busy scheduled to get in touch with your inner self for renewal.  Meditation is something that not many people do, probably because they have not discovered its health benefits.  However, if undertaken properly meditation is a perfect way to keep off bad habits and help you grow mentally and physically strong.

Beta Waves (12-30Hz) are responsible for normal waking awareness and a sharp state of alertness, critical reasoning and logic.  Conversely, alpha (7.5 – 12 Hz) are brain waves associated with deep relaxation, closed eyes, and daydreaming.  The state of detachment and relaxation achieved with light meditation is characteristic of Alpha and is ideal for reordering your mind for optimal performance and success.  Alpha enhances your memory, imagination, learning, concentration and visualization.  This helps you achieve the zen alpha state for overall health.

Modern scientific instruments have been used for seeing what exactly happens in the body when people meditate and how the body and brain change with regular meditation.  Here is how the calming effect of mediation works. The nervous system of the body consists of parasympathetic systems whose primary role is to regulate breathing, heart rate and other involuntary functions. The sympathetic system  prepares the body for a threat or any vigorous activity.  Meditation works by increasing the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system and lessening the actions of the sympathetic nervous system, leading to intense relaxation of body, mind and soul, with its intended benefits.

Because of its relaxation value, meditation is increasingly being used in mainstream health to reduce pain and stress. It has been helpful to terminally ill patients especially when it comes to reducing stress, pain and revitalizing depressed immune systems.  It has also been found useful for individuals attempting to deal with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, coronary artery disease and cancer.

For you to realize these health benefits, you need to stick with meditation for a significantly long period of time. The idea is to begin with a mindset that fosters sustainability and meditating with a clear purpose while putting your best effort in.  As I said earlier, there is no specific way to meditate, consider experimenting with different types of meditation like kneeling, sitting, eyes closed and comfortable, just ensure that there is little to no disturbance.  It’s always ideal to meditate in the early morning when your mind is still fresh and remember to take a few moments to feel appreciative after every session!

I'm a big believer in meditation, I love it! The problem with me is finding the time and discipline to do it more often... as my days are usually packed but still there are so many opportunities to do it through out the day, whether standing in line for a cup of coffee or whatever... the trick is to find the discipline to find moments to do it. Although I have read about walking meditation as well which I want to start learning.

The walking meditation sounds interesting.

Look up Jon Kabat-Zin Guided Mindfulness Meditation Series 3 there is a section on walking meditation. Available as an audio book to guide you through it.

Ok thanks.

Beautifully put, for me meditation is the way I connect to the heartbeat of the earth. I feel we ignore our connection to this heartbeat at our peril.

Thanks for your reply @perceptualflaws I totally agree with you, sometimes we need to stop and smell the roses! We just need to unplug :))

As with my theory, the meditation is something that brings our consciousness (awareness), from Reason to Emotion or Instinct. Because Instinct is our mind of healing, we can achieve also healing. :)
