Analysis of Donggala Post-Disaster Health Problems

Beginning in August 2018, Indonesia was afflicted by grief due to the earthquake that struck Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. This earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale successfully paralyzed the city of Lombok from its various activities.

Even more troubling to the people, especially the citizens of Lombok, is another aftershock that continues to occur after the main earthquake on August 5. Then, not long after, at the end of September 2018, the earthquake and tsunami returned, this time hit the region of Central Sulawesi, precisely in the cities of Palu and Donggala.

This earthquake also triggered tsunamis as high as approximately 1-2 meters, because they included shallow earthquakes and were located near wide waters. Nakita source

Besides bringing grief, natural disasters also bring problems in many aspects of life, one of which is health. Broken bones both open and closed, torn wounds both large and small, to death are some of the problems that can be witnessed directly when a disaster occurs or can be referred to as immediate health impact.

However, there are other things that also need to be realized. Besides bringing grief, natural disasters also bring problems in many aspects of life, one of which is health. Disasters not only bring health problems directly as mentioned above, but also indirectly or better known as secondary health problems related to the disaster, both in the medium term and long term.

Here we will discuss some health problems related to disasters. The goal is that we recognize and avoid these problems in the future. Of course, we hope that the government and the public can jointly face natural disasters which, however unavoidable, will always appear at certain times. With preparedness, hopefully, the natural disasters that occurred did not become a big disaster for our lives.

The Health problems directly

Direct health problems caused by various disasters according to the type of disaster. In earthquakes due to earthquakes, the most common problems were injuries, both abrasions, torn wounds, and bruises.

Other health problems that are also caused by earthquakes and are direct are fractures, ranging from closed, open fractures, to multiple fractures. Similar health problems can also be found in floods and tsunamis, but not as many deaths as drowning.

The Secondary health problems after a disaster

Infection wounds due to non-optimal wound care and the development of infectious diseases in evacuation tents are some of the health problems that arise indirectly due to disasters. These problems arise due to several factors.

Poor sanitation

Everyone needs at least 15-20 liters of clean water a day for their domestic needs. Of course, this is not easy to achieve in a disaster situation. Limited sources of clean water available and the unavailability of waste disposal sites from both humans and households make infectious diseases easy to develop in refugee camps. This poor sanitation makes diseases such as diarrhea and respiratory tract infections easy.

Solid refuge

Inside the refuge, people get an area of 3.5 square meters. This is a condition that is difficult to repair. Places that are commonly used by refugees by other people.

In disasters with massive infrastructure damage (more than 25% of places severely damaged), shelter tents were built as temporary shelters. However, sheltering also has long social adverse effects. The Shelter can attract people who do not have a place to live there. Actually, the shelter was built temporarily and the room did not meet the standard of the house.

Other health problems that we can find are psychological problems after a disaster. Losing homes, property, and even loved ones suddenly triggers the emergence of psychological disorders in disaster victims. Some of the reactions shown by disaster victims who experience psychological disorders such as feeling alone and no one else has the same fate, sleep disturbances such as difficulty sleeping or even much sleep, feeling tired and not energized, anxious, headaches, to abuse addictive substances to eliminate stress.

In this condition, disaster victims must receive adequate psychological support from volunteers, health workers, and fellow victims. Stress conditions in evacuation can also cause psychological problems for victims of disasters both adults and children.

The support that can be given for example provides reliable information about the disaster without exaggerating, helping to convince disaster victims that the sadness they experience will pass, and explain how to make peace with the tragedy that has happened.

These are things we need to realize together. Disasters not only generate losses in terms of infrastructure and economy but also a lot of health. The government already has a minimum standard of handling health problems due to disaster and handling of refugees. By using this standard, it is expected that post-disaster problems, especially in the health sector, can be minimized.
