FIRST AND FOREMOST:
Make a commitment to enjoy your food, but also to seek nutritious food. The reason "diets" fail or why people "fail" their diets is because the traditional,
commercial definition of a diet never works. You must enjoy your food and create new, but nutritious sensory habits with your food. This is how you eat healthfully your whole life.
Start with whole foods you enjoy, and simply add more of these to your diet as the weeks go by. You'll be loving your food in no time.

Speaking of adding new foods to your diet, aim for a variety of colors and a variety of foods every week. Every day is even more ideal.
This is how to ensure you're getting a wide spectrum of micronutrients, vitamins and minerals. Variety is the spice of life, and the same is true of food.
You cannot expect to remain healthy long-term if your diet is comprised of 10 foods or fewer. Gently explore new foods you haven't tried, and expand at a pace you can handle.
Drink plenty of water. Drinking water truly is underrated. Ultimately, it's the only beverage the human body needs. We can get everything else required for great health and nutrition from whole plant foods and the occasional supplement.
Avoid sugar. Stay away from it as often as you can. It's a death spell waiting to happen. Replace your sugar cravings with mildly sweet but healthier foods,
such as fresh fruit. It's also very addictive, and can cause a lot of trouble later on in life if you start consuming sugar early on and your habits never change.
Yes, your body does need sugar in the form of glucose, but all forms of external sugar are eventually broken down into glucose in your body,
and you can obtain more than enough glucose from fresh fruit, whole grains (if desired) and gluconeogenesis.
Include healthy fat. This remains one of the most overlooked and confusing areas of optimal nutrition. Your body needs fat,
and it's your best fuel source. Check out this post for any questions you might have.
Utilize appropriate amounts of protein. Include it regularly in your diet, but also don't overdo it. It's actually quite easy to get all the protein you need in a day without even trying/thinking about it.
You basically only need 0.25-0.5 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass. Check out the videos below for more details.
