First, read the Steem whitepaper (click the 3 lines in the top right hand corner of your screen).
I found these guys really useful if you're a beginner, watch their videos:

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

  • Disagreement on rewards
  • Fraud or plagiarism
  • Hate speech or trolling
  • Miscategorized content or spam
