Hello everyone. Welcome back to this sixth week of the course. I am happy to have the opportunity to participate again. Let's start:

Defining White Blood Cells

White blood cells are part of the body's defense and immunity from attacks by various foreign microorganisms such as germs, bacteria and viruses that cause infections in the body. These blood cells have a very vital role in keeping the body's condition protected.

Like soldiers in a country, that is the importance of white blood cells for the body's defense.

White blood cells work by swimming in the bloodstream to detect and destroy various disease-causing organisms such as germs, viruses, fungi, bacteria, parasites and other harmful substances.

White blood cells are also able to produce antibodies which are very important to fight various harmful substances in the body.

Generally, these blood cells have a safe level in the adult body between 4,000 to 10,000 cells/mm³ which are produced in the bone marrow. If someone experiences excess white blood cells, they can be categorized as suffering from leukocytosis, while someone who experiences a deficiency of these blood cells is said to be suffering from leukopenia.

  • Monocytes are also part of the white blood cells. It has a role to fight infections and is responsible for the body's immunity.

  • Eosinophils are white blood cells that have a role to fight infections caused by parasites and bacteria. It has a number of 30-350 cells per microliter of blood for normal levels.

  • Basophils are also white blood cells that have a key role in detecting and destroying viruses and germs and foreign microorganisms that enter the body.

  • Neutrophils are the most abundant component in white blood cells. It has a composition of around 50-70% of all white blood cells. Its role is very important in maintaining our body's immunity. This cell is also able to send signals to other white blood cells to work together to fight infections.

  • Lymphocytes have almost the same role as other white blood cells. Protecting the body from attacks by germs, bacteria and viruses that cause infections. This cell is also produced in the bone marrow. Lymphocytes also flow in the blood, but are more focused on the lymphatic organs such as the spleen and tonsils.


Neutrophilia vs Neutropenia

✅ Neutrophilia is a condition where the number of Neutrophils has exceeded the normal limit. The normal number of Neutrophils is around 50% to 70%. It can be said that this disease occurs because Neutrophils develop rapidly out of control.

Some causes of Neutrophilia include smoking habits, excessive stress, blood cancer can also trigger Neutrophilia. But the worst is the occurrence of severe infection in a disease.


✅ Neutropenia is the opposite of Neutrophilia. This is a case where someone experiences a deficiency in the number of Neutrophils. If someone has a Neutrophil count below 1500/microliter, then in this case the person can be said to have Neutropenia.

There are several causes of Neutropenia in a person, including disorders of the bone marrow, the use of drugs such as antibiotics and also the effects of prolonged radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

In addition, Neutropenia is also caused by infections of dangerous diseases such as HIV AIDS and tuberculosis. Alcohol dependence can also trigger this disease.


Explain cases related to white blood cells

Actually, I rarely get information about diseases related to white blood cells.

However, a few years ago one of my cousins ​​told me about her husband's death caused by cancer in his neck.

At that time, her husband went to the hospital to check the lump in his neck. After the examination, the doctor concluded that the patient had to undergo chemotherapy because the lump in his neck was a malignant tumor.

For several months, my cousin's husband underwent chemotherapy regularly. Initially, the tumor in his neck began to heal. But suddenly the poor man was dying and died. The doctor suspected that the man had Neutropenia due to the chemotherapy he underwent during treatment.
