Hemp: A Valuable Source of Nutrition

in hemp •  7 years ago  (edited)

Industrial hemp is a crop that is good for many things and can be used to help create tens of thousands of different products. Not only is hemp good for things like making rope, soap, clothing, paper, and many other items, but it's also a great source of food.

Today there is still a lot of confusion surrounding hemp and many folks believe that consuming a hemp food product, like hemp seeds, is going to get them high, but hemp food products that are sold in countries like the US and Canada, don't contain the THC needed to produce an intoxicating effect; that you would expect to experience if you had consumed cannabis.

When it comes to hemp food products, hemp seeds are commonly what most consumers are familiar with.

Hemp seeds are regarded by many to be a superfood and are said to be a great source of planet-based protein and Omega-3 fatty acids which are said to have beneficial effects related to cardiovascular health. They are also a great source of vitamin E, iron, and calcium. It's also been alleged that hemp seeds might help to provide other health benefits like improve skin disorders, help to aid digestion, and more.

It isn't that hard to find hemp seeds, depending on where you live, you might find them at a local cannabis dispensary, or you might find them being sold on the shelf at your local grocery market. Many hemp food items are also sold online and delivered around the US. There are a great deal of options in the hemp food space: hemp seeds, milk, hemp ice cream, hemp protein powder, hemp oil, and more. The nutritional benefits to be derived from hemp seeds and other hemp food items, have been compared to that of other superfood items like flax or chia seeds.

Hemp retail sales continue to grow steadily.

When it comes to the overall hemp food market in the US, retail sales for 2016 were estimated to be around $292 million, but that also includes sales of supplements and hemp body care products (lotions etc). But a great deal of sales were excluded from establishments (like Whole Foods) which didn't provide data to be considered in that estimate, therefore it could be generously underestimated.

It's estimated that hemp food sales grew in the US last year by at least 44 percent.

Farmers and hemp advocates are working hard to try and educate the public on the different varieties of food that can be produced from hemp and one of the prominent farms doing that work is JD Farms which operates in New York. They want to see hemp removed from the Schedule 1 list of Controlled Substances, so that farmers have more freedom to produce things like hemp greens for salads and other hemp food items.

To try and educate the public, JD Farms has been distributing hemp leaves that can be eaten as baby greens in a salad, they are being given to some of the restaurants in the city. They are also marketing hemp to be used for protein bars, toasted seed snacks, and other items.

The hemp market is expected to grow in years to come and more farmers around the nation are becoming interested in growing this crop for the potentially vast economic benefits that can be reaped. It might be only a matter of time before hemp is further embraced and looked at as more of a positive agricultural product, rather than something that should be prohibited. Some industry experts suggest that this is easily going to become a billion-dollar market.

remember, THC CURES CANCER

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

You're right and you're wrong. CBD allows Thc to recoup the mechanisms gone awry which can lead to increased invasiveness of cancers. To cure cancer you'll have to find the answer as to why people aren't producing their endocannabinoids, hint: lack of delta-6-desaturase activity

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Sounds like you know the subject well. I think I understand; so it could be different treatment needed for various cancers or body type.

Please elaborate, and give any obvious sources:

  • "lack of delta-6-desaturase activity"
  • "why people aren't producing their endocannabinoids"

I see you are new here. Welcome.
If you have treated people with cannabis, it would be interesting to see you write about it.

The coolest thing about steemit, is you have a small rarified little community of people, if they network outside of academia, could really get a lot done quickly.

I did talk with a medicinal grower in Santa Cruz, and he told me to mix both Sativa and Indicas, for a balanced CBD/THC potential. That makes sense to me; I think most strains have at least some Indica, so I tend not to worry about it, unless it's a pure Sativa. I know there are estimates for each strain, but who knows if they are accurate. So I have usually gone for a pure Indica, that I know has a balanced THC/CBD profile, and makes folks sleepy.

Endocannabinoids are made from essential fatty acids. The most well known of which are 2-ag and anandamide made from arachidonic acid the omega-6 fatty acid. Cannabinoids are illegal in my state (and I'm currently out of work). I apologize the reasons for "lack of delta-6-desaturase activity" and
"why people aren't producing their endocannabinoids" is a guarded secret of mine produced from many years of intensive study. Though if you were to heed my nutritional advice one should regain proper function. Yes I intended to do a writup on thc/cbd though I fear doing so without having a following first would leave me rather destitute. Though I'm writing one up now anyone. Hope it is well received. https://steemit.com/science/@drabs/legalization-of-marijuana-process-underway

hey man you must really love thc. lol. didnt expect to see you over here in the weed section. haha.

I came here to try and see if I could get a few more people to check out my article I posted about the day I got shot over 2 pounds of weed. Hah. Worth a shot anyways.
"The Day I Got Shot, True Story Posted Only on Steemit"
Of course, you have already read it :D lol. might as well use your comment as a way for me to get my comment shown on the top of the page, hope ya dont mind. lmao.
Appreciate it. :D

I did check your article; it was a fun read. U R A LUCKY MOFO

lol thanks man

awesome story! upped and resteemed!

thanks @deearchi :)

Didn't some of the (queue the heavenly music) Founding Fathers grow hemp commercially?

The entire Schedule 1 classification is more about protectionist economic policy than public health.

All business.
Watch 60 Minutes lately; it's been big pharma commercials for 20 years now.

60 Minutes, CNN, HNN, Fox News, Fox Business News, The Hallmark Channel (that makes sense though, it's all reruns of Matlock & Murder She Wrote so the average viewer is about 72).

I get the 3 pound bag of Nutiva Organic Hemp Seed Shelled, for $40 from AllStarHealth.com delivered right to my door. It tasted great and keeps well in the fridge. Thin I'll go eat some now! Thanks for the article; hemp is good for you!

Thank you for fighting the good fight and educating people on this matter one day people will realize it's many uses and it's unfair label it's been given.

Its actually unbelievable how many people are still confused by the two. If people could get high from the variety of hemp products available then I am certain there would be a lot of individuals lighting up their clothing and even more salads being eaten! haha!!

It is indeed somewhat of a "super food" and has a multitude of nutritional and healing benefits.

On the other side of the coin and referring to cannabis, they recently legalised the smoking of it in your home, here in South Africa. It was a very happy day for many Capetonians... as we are often referred to as the "stoners" of South Africa. haha

i do better eating it than smoking it.

Me too, before vape, I had my lungs heavy, now on i prefer eating it, Healthiest way,

When I was a young man I use to race pigeons and they use to feed them hemp seeds as a treat after coming home from a race, the birds would go crazy for them. That was 25 years ago, thanks for sharing cheers.

It can be used in many things even pain relief I done a small post a few days ago one CBD which I know helps my wife with fibromyalgia. Cheers mike

Thanks for sharing!

This was a very interesting lesson for me, did not know any of this. I am helping my grandson with his sience and just yesterday we were looking at how to clean up landfills especially hazardoes ones. Thank you.

Great article. I work in the cannabis industry in Oregon. This is the first year I have seen hemp really, really take off.

Here though the hemp is being used to make CBD oils, but the industrial and commercial applications are pretty much endless. Thanks a bunch for sharing!

Great post thank you!

In India, hemp is traditionally used in various preparations. The seeds are added to pickles and it is also offered in temples. It's a great opportunity for all the smokers out there as it opens up a new channel for them ;)

that is very interesting, didn't know that :) thx for sharing

Hemp is good for so much.

So why would stupid politicians not legalize it??

Easy to grow, millions of uses.... big boys can't make a packet on it.

A bright future. Peace!

awesome upped thanks

Lovely read, I wish that they would begin using hemp again for textiles etc.. would be widely appreciated and cut our retail costs tremendously!.

The healing properties from cannabis is simply put,, out of this world♥

Please remember that Hemp and Cannabis are not the same plants.. related but not the same thing.

One of nature's marvels which should be easily, legally and readily as available as water is. Nice write up @doitvoluntarily!

If you like this post check out my page we post all the fire cannabis pics and they are all mine

Great post.
I would never have guessed hemp was so versatile and have so many available products,it's definitely a super plant.
Why are the benefits of it being denied to some of us by our governments.

We in India , at some festival mix it with Cold milk and add some flavors like thandai, an Indian recipe and drink it with our friends. We love it .

Yes. So much has been said and done . Perhaps its time has finally arrived .

I've never heard of hemp being used in consumer products like salads.
A really interesting post @doitvoluntarily

Didn't know much about this stuff before, thanks for this great article :)

Great post, thank you for spreading the good news about hemp and the wonderful benefits that come from it. 100% upvote and a resteem on this!

I agree.... hemp will keep getting more popular... day by day

Pot, cannabis, marijuana is dis illegal right?

You should check out my recent post titled "The Day I got Shot, True Story Posted Only on Steemit"
I talk about the night that I got shot when i refused to give this gangster dude who was trying to rob me 2 pounds of marijuana...ya..i got shot over 2 pounds of OUTDOOR weed. lol. Really didn't think he would shoot me over 2 pounds of weed..but yeah. I was wrong. lol.

fuck cancer, smoke weed. :)

Great resources! It is good that more people are opening their eyes to the real truth of this.

I wonder what hemp tastes like..I'm hoping it doesn't taste like the smell of weed :)

Hemp is severely underrated.

Been eating hemp protein for years- great stuff!

Hemp is awesome ,Thanks foe sharing @doitvoluntarily
upvoted and resteemed!

This plant has been hidden away and illegal for a reason...MONEY, free the weed

Great story - very similar case with Chia Seeds. I heard Kelly Slater invested huge amounts of money into the industry because of the health benefits and more people starting to switch on to how good natural foods are for your body

You got my vote and a resteem :)

Growing up during the 'hippie' generation I know of most of these uses, but happy to see new uses being offered. Good post....my brownies were awesome too lol
