I make my living by fixing problems. If they are electrical, fine. If not I still need to fix them. I have to work in every engineering dicipline with equal ease. I fixed a hydraulic boring machine by rebuilding the hydraulic spindle controls, not a wire in the area I fixed. I had to make the parts, no longer available.
That is why they call me. They are tired of the whining, and want it running. They do NOT care what I need to do to fix it.
They also do not care what I need to charge them for the work, so we are both happy.

R&D costs a lot of money, and selling a large quantity of less effective things, without the R&D outflow, will raise profits.
