Stepwells: The Vanishing Steps of India's Subterranean Wonders

Once teeming with life, this place once saw laughter, sorrow, and joy shared between communities and travellers who would gather to quench their thirst, celebrating life together. Today, the Nadol stepwell lies forgotten, neglected, and abandoned, like most of its cousins.

A palace under the ground. Subterranean tunnels. Steps leading down from the surface to the water level several meters below. That's a stepwell- an underground marvel of ancient engineering and architecture.

Built several hundreds of years ago, such wells are found in most Indian villages, particularly in Rajasthan and Gujarat and today need immediate attention.
