She was a Sudanese born ex slave(1869-1947).She became a religious sister in Italy,where she lived and worked there for 45years.
In 2002,she was declared a saint by the Catholic Church.She was born in 1869 in Darfur(now Western Sudan)in the village of Olgossa.She was kidnapped by Arab Berber slave traders at the tender age of nine on February 1877.
over the course of her ordeal she lost memory of her birth name.She was resold by her captors more 3 times. she took an Arabic name given to her by her slavers,Bakhita,meaning Lucky.
