On April 21st, 1898 the Spanish-American War began with the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine in Havanna. The U.S. took Cuba’s side in their fight for independence from Spain and thusly established itself as the dominant force in the Caribbean.
As a result of the war the U.S. also gained control of Spain’s Pacific territories and led to U.S. involvement in the Philippine Revolution and Insurrection. These conflicts gave rise to the .38 Special, which replaced the poorly performing .38 Long Colt.
