In August of 1857 the Queen Victoria half penny imperforate stamp was issued. These stamps were originally purchased to pay for newspaper postage, when mailed out. This stamp was printed on wove paper in shades of rose and lilac rose. It was also rarely printed on horizontal or vertical wove ribbed paper.

Approximately 2,600,000 stamps were ordered. Some stamp catalogues value this stamp at $1,400 ($1,150 US) in very fine mint condition.

========================================

In June of 1857 the Queen Victoria 71/2 pence imperforate stamp was issued. Mail sent to the UK from Halifax, Canada by packet ships had a reduced rate of 6 pence sterling which was equal to 71/2 pence currency. Therefore this stamp was inscribed “Canada Packet Postage” and “Six Pence Sterling” in the oval frame of Queen Victoria’s portrait. In addition, the 6d stg. (6 pence sterling) and 71/2d cy (71/2 pence currency) was inscribed on the corners of this stamp.

The portrait of Queen Victoria on this stamp is similar to her portrait on the 12 pence stamp issued in 1851. This stamp was printed on wove paper in shades of green and dark green, and 100,000 were ordered. Some stamp catalogues value this stamp at $12,000 ($9,750 US) when in very fine condition.

In 1857 the HRH Prince Albert 6 pence imperforate stamp was issued. It was printed on very thick and soft fibrous wove paper in a reddish purple colour. Due to the soft nature of the paper, it is very difficult to find this stamp devoid of flaws, in used condition.

Some catalogues value this stamp at $40,000 ($32,500 US) in very fine mint condition and $9,000 ($7,300 US) in very fine used condition,

Interesting! Thanks @daveks!

the background design within the frame on the very last stamp with Prince Albert looks very much like that of the same feature used on the first two U.S. Stamps:

Maybe printed by the same company Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, and Edson?

I would agree, it’s very likely the same company was used!

yup I just checked on wikipedia.. R.W.H.&E. printed the first issues then eventually American Bank Note got the contract... So the same engravers were working on USA issues at the time also.

I am not a huge fan of stamps but I am a huge fan of history!!! great post!!! thank you for sharing it

Man, I used to have a TON of very old stamps. It was an old collection that I had gotten at a yard sale. I have no idea what ever happened to them. I sure hope none of them were this valuable! It's a great post. Makes me regret losing my stamps though! lol

Never too late to start collecting again!

very interesting stamps @daveks

Thanks for your post.

Half penny stamps? They are almost a buck now!

Good old inflation, that hidden tax!

the 1857 duo-denominated Queen Victoria stamp is interesting...

But I'm puzzled by the equivalency of 6 pence Sterling to 7 1/2 pence Currency. The former being 80% of the latter... reminds me of Canada's traditional 80% silver content in their coinage.

I guess if one was paying for the postage in "currency" (i.e. paper or pelts?) one would pay the full 7 1/2 value.. but if payment was made in specie (coins or silver) a discount of 1.5 pence would be enjoyed.

Does that make sense or am I out there drifting a bit?🌙
