Vanessa Williams becomes first black Miss America

That was a major day for equality worldwide when Vanessa became Miss America on September 17, 1983 - as the very first black woman! No matter what happened later when she gave up her cfrown after nude photos leaked it was a major step for the Afro American community - Vanessa later was a highly successful singer and actress.
