Lost WW1 Battleship Located 5,000 Feet Below The Waves

The wreck of a World War 1 battleship that sunk with more than 800 men on board after a naval battle off The Falkland Islands has been found.
The Scharnhorst - not to be confused with the World war 2 battleship of the same name - was the flagship of celebrated German Vice-Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee.
The warship sank with all hands including von Spee on December 8, 1914.
The ship has remained undiscovered on the seabed for more than 100 years.
The search started five years ago on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Falkland Islands, led by Falklander Mensun Bound.
Guns poking in every direction
"We are often chasing shadows on the seabed, but when the Scharnhorst first appeared in the data flow, there was no doubt that this was one of the German fleet," he said.
"Suddenly she just came out of the gloom with great guns poking in every direction. As a Falkland Islander and a marine archaeologist, a discovery of this significance is an unforgettable, poignant moment in my life.”
The ship came to rest 5,300 feet under the waves almost 100 miles off the capital of the islands, Port Stanley.
The Scharnhorst was launched in March 1906. The 13,000 ton ship was 474 feet long and could reach 22.5 knots. She was armed with eight 21 cm guns.
Decisive naval battle
In November 1914, she engaged the British navy at the Battle of Coronel, off Chile, the first engagement between the two countries at sea during World War 1. The Germans sank two British warships, with 1,600 lives lost with losing a German sailor.
A month later, British ships attacked the German battle group off the Falklands.
The Scharnhorst was sunk and 2,200 German sailors died on her and other ships heavily damaged in the battle. The victory ended Germany’s ability to raid Atlantic convoys as the battleship led the country’s only overseas naval group.
A new Scharnhorst was commissioned in 1939 and was sunk with the loss of 1,932 lives in 1943 in the Battle of the North Cape after terrorising Britain and Russia from America in the Atlantic and northern seas.
