The siege of Zamość took place during the Khmelnytsky Uprising in 1648.
At the turn of October and November, the Cossack army approached Zamość. Bohdan Khmelnytsky attempted to capture this fortress city, but without faith in success. In the first half The seventeenth century Zamość was the most modern and most powerful fortress in the Commonwealth and Eastern Europe. Enormous fortifications with numerous bastions surrounded him. The technical condition of the walls, artillery and the number of the crew was constantly cared for by Jan Sobiepan Zamoyski - III Zamość Estate (and also brother-in-law Jeremi Wiśniowiecki).
The forces of the invaders were estimated at over ten thousand people. Forty 4,700 people (including 2,100 infantry, 200 reiters, 1,400 gentry, and 1,000 townsmen) under the command of Castellan of Elbląg, Ludwik Wejher and Margrave Władysław Myszkowski, defended the fortress. Many refugees from nearby villages and towns, and even from Rus, Podolia and Wołyń have taken refuge in the city. During the siege, the construction defect of the fortress became visible. Cossacks dug a crevice causeway and dropped water from the pond, revealing the southern part of the fortifications. It forced the defenders to focus on this episode of large forces. Bohdan Khmelnytsky, however, did not have large departments allowing him to conquer Zamość, and besides, the winter was approaching, to which the besiegers were not prepared. On the other hand, the defenders could not count on relief, nor did they have enough food to feed the crew and the population who sought shelter behind the walls of the fortress. Therefore, after 17 days, a mutually beneficial arrangement on the payment of a ransom by the townspeople was made.
