First Methodist Cemetery
circa 1819
This is a mysterious headstone which I noticed at the First Methodist Cemetery. As you can see, there is no information about this person other than them being someone's father. Strange, right?
"The First Methodist Church acquired this property in 1819 and built a small brick church here. The first burial was in 1828. This church was torn down when the congregation built a new church at 125 West Main Street, Sharpsburg in 1857." This is a pre Civil War cemetery.
This is the case with many of the headstones in this area, they have been weathered to the point of being blank slates. The ground has shifted a lot at most of the graveyards. The ground is very bumpy, it feels like you are walking on bones.
Tread lightly on the dead.
Maybe some poor dead soldier's ghost is moving the ground. Spooky!
