At the end of the world war II, the demands for a jewish state in palestine grew. in 1947, the united nations took over responsibility for palestine, deviding it into an arab stateand a jewish state. the jews agreed to this plan, but the arb did not. the state of israel came into being on may 14, 1948. it was immediately attacked by arab armies from aegypt, syria, lebanon, iraq and jordan - known collectively as the arab league. by 1949, had defeated the arab league and added land to its own territory.
FACT FILE
Civil war broke out between christians and muslims in the lebanon in 1975. fighting caused extensive damage in Beirut.
