Right-wing claim: Hitler instituted a gun registry and confiscated the guns.
Left-wing claim: The registry was in place before Hitler took power. Hitler actually passed policies to increase access to guns.
Actual history: The Weimar Republic created the gun registry about four years before Hitler's rise to power. Hitler did pass certain policies to make guns more accessible to people who the state deemed "trustworthy". Guess who the state didn't deem to be trustworthy. Anybody who wasn't deemed trustworthy by the Nazi government who was found in possession of a firearm faced harsh prison sentences and fines. If you were a blond haired, blue eyed member of the Nazi party, you could get a gun no problem. If you were a Jew, or a gypsy, or any kind of political dissident, touching a gun was a felony.
So, both sides...get your history right.
For people on the right -- there's no benefit in getting this wrong. If anything, knowing that it wasn't Hitler that created the registry strengthens the argument against a registry now. It's proof that, if we passed a registry now, and the person pushing for it trusts Biden, that the same registry could be exploited by the next person who comes into power. Ask them, "If Trump is literally Hitler, and he's running for president again, do you really want him to have his mitts on the registry with the power to decide who he views to be trustable?"
For the people on the left -- now that you're aware of the history, don't you see how your rhetoric is closer to Hitler's than the people on the right? Maybe you'll claim that you won't be racist about how you decide who's trustworthy; but, we all know that that's bullshit. Would you view a Trump supporter as trustworthy with a gun? No, okay, you're in line with Hitler on this thing in disarming political opponents. How about people with certain religious views?
Everything that you talk about when you pretend that you don't want to ban guns falls into the Hitler camp of, "Prove to the government that you're worthy. "
