According to Greek mythology, the Amazons are a warrior people residing on the shores of the Black Sea, although other historians locate them in Asia Minor or Libya. Their first traces date back to antiquity and correspond to the warriors of the Scythian and Sarmatian peoples. The legend says they used to cut their right breast so they could shoot with the bow.

The Amazons, it is said, kill their male children or make them blind or maimed and then use them as servants. To ensure the perpetuation of their civilization, they unite once a year with the most beautiful men of the neighboring tribes.

The Amazons invaded two parts of Asia Minor and Greece. They would also have confronted the troops of Alexander the Great between -331 and -324. Legend has it that they took part in the Trojan war and that their queen Penthesilea fell in love with Achilles.
