in history •  3 years ago

WWII is one of the greatest battle in human history, which involved over 30 countries 70 millions people. This war was initiated by Axis power, mainly Germany and Japan, due to their lack of resources, imperialism, and fascism. Most of the war are between the Axis power and the Allied Power, mainly including United States and Soviet Union, and most of the battles take place in Europe and Pacific. In WWII, battle of Stalingrad and battle of Midway are considered as the turning point of the European Theater and the Pacific Theater respectively.

The battle of Stalingrad happened between Nazi Germany and Soviet Union during 1942-1943 in the European theater. The German army outpowered the Soviet army because they have more tanks, aircrafts, and artillery pieces. Outpowered, the Soviet army planned street battle, and many citizens were scripted in this battle. The street-level battle makes the battle of Stalingrad last over half a year, which makes Nazi Germany’s military support and supply to Stalingrad limited, and end up leading to the defeat of Germany. After the battle of Stalingrad, due to the loss of German army, Nazi Germany's invasion plan was stopped, and German army seized their aggressive action compare to before. For Soviet Union, the victory of the battle of Stalingrad gives Soviet army the hope for the victory of WWII, and the Soviet army began to retake the land that were occupied by German armies.

In the Pacific front, the battle of Midway in June 1942 is a major turning point, because the air force of Japan is significantly weakened and restricted due to their loss. Since early 1942, US had obtained the message of the time and location that Japan would initiate attack, the Midway Island. Because of this decoding success, US Army was able to develop a plan to defend Japanese invasion. US destroyed all 4 of the Japanese aircraft carrier at the cost of only 1 US carrier. Japan’s loss of this large number of carriers restricted their air force, because in the sea, carriers are stops and supply stations for aircrafts. After the battle of Midway, Japan lost its military advantage in the Pacific front, and turned to a defense position. US victory in the battle of Midway stopped Japan’s ambition to invade mid-Pacific regions.

The battle of Stalingrad and the battle of Midway marked the turning point of the European theater and the Pacific theater respectively. This two battles restrict Axis power and bring the Allies the opportunity to defend invasion, fight back until the victory. For Axis power, their military powers are significantly reduced after these battles. Overall, these two battles contribute to the final victory of Allies in World War II.
