On the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, Ukraine is launching a new program where countries and organizations can subsidize Ukrainian grain exports to poor countries.
USAID and the UN World Food Programme have already pledged funds for the first shipments.
President Zelensky:
"Even as the country struggles with food shortages, devastated farmland, and widespread blackouts, we will never forget our role as a responsible global citizen – especially having experienced famine as a nation ourselves. Africa is in desperate need of food and Ukraine stands ready to support vulnerable people in their hour of need.”
The MENA region in particular is highly dependent on Ukrainian grain imports.
Five million Ukrainians died of starvation. Putin's regime is trying to carry out another genocide of Ukrainians.
This memorial is right in the center of Kyiv by the river. I think a lot of people have heard of the Holodomor in passing, but don't really appreciate the scale of the harm.
Голодомор/Holodomor is a compound word of голод/holod, Ukrainian for hunger, and мор/mor, Ukrainian for plague.
I highly recommend the movie Mr. Jones about the Welsh journalist Gareth Jones who reported the Holodomor to the western world. He would later be kidnapped and killed by the Soviet secret police.
