I don't think you can really blame CNN for those questions, they pretty much had to ask them, considering the "leak" from Warren's campaign. It was a terrible strategy error by someone on her team and hopefully this relative "non-issue" will just blow over before too long.
Why a non-issue? I don't think many people would be surprised if Bernie had said something like that or that they would be surprised that he denied it if so. Undoubtedly there are plenty of people who do think a woman can't win the office right now. So I don't think it would hurt him that much in the long run, even if it's true. OTOH, he had a remarkably strong defense against the idea that he had said it. And there's also going to be a whole thing around different recollections of a conversation from that long ago, to further muddy the waters. So at the end of the day, it just makes Warren's campaign look weak for bring this up as an issue. I hope they learn something from this.

Warren then saying to Bernie afterwards that she "think he just called her a list on national television", as if he was wrong to defend himself from that baseless accusation, was so cringe..

I would never vote for either of them, but the moderators clearly did an injustice to Bernie by blatantly ignoring his response. Seeing them carry water for one candidate over any other reveals what a sham the "debates" are / were. They should have pushed back against Warren instead of asking the cliched "when did Bernie stop beating his wife" loaded question.
