In the world of anime there are a lot of titles where everyone can find something they would fall in love with. It comes as no surprise that there are a few titles that become particularly important to viewers. For me, a good example is "Neon Genesis Evangelion". But I'm not talking about "Eva" today because, let's face it, this is an anime about which everything has been said. I have another gem that I think not everyone knows about. It's “Millennium Actress” by my favorite anime director Satoshi Kon.
“Millennium Actress” chronicles the career of the titular character. Chiyoko, as that's her name, decides to follow this path of life while searching for a mysterious man to whom she wanted to return a key he had lost. The plot isn’t really that original or creative as you can see. The movie makes up for a lack of originality in basic synopsis with other qualities. First of all, the narration is really unique. Satoshi Kon is the absolute master of bending reality with fiction and this is another example that no one can compete against him in that field. The present Chiyoko tells the story, not only about her life, but about her movies as well. Thanks to that story of life is mixed with fictional stories bending with the present. Even side characters listening to the story find their place in this narration. This kind of narration is very well done, which makes it a very interesting piece of visual art. As for visuals, this movie's animation can't be overlooked. In a nutshell, this movie is a visual orgy. Director bends multiple styles with this great animation that it is hard not to be amazed.
As you can see “Millennium Actress” is a good film in general, but there's another aspect that makes me love this even more. In my view, the most beautiful part of the story is the theme behind it. At the end of a story we discover that dream of the main character: meeting this mysterious man, wasn’t really that important. What really mattered was pursuing this dream. The act of dreaming is something that means much even if there is no anticipated result. That makes this movie a love letter but not only towards movies, as we can think looking at the title, but towards dreaming itself. This thought fills me with so many warm feelings that I can’t just write it down clearly. Author makes this so sincere; I can feel his heart so I just can’t close mine. Just a gorgeous movie.
Also I think that this movie is a really good choice to introduce anime to someone else. It is really good, it's a movie so it's really fast to watch. There aren't any weird japanese things. So yeah watch it and then introduce it to your friends. No one will regret it, I hope. I think that sometime in the near future I, myself, will come again to this dreamworld of Satoshi Kon.
Thanks for reading!
Remember: don’t stop dreaming!
