Kane's penalty shot.
This game actually had no significance, it was to all effects a friendly, with an already relegated England and Germany secure in third place in the group. And that is all the first half was, two teams just playing a game they had to play. A slightly better England in this first half, but it was actually boring, a game I can see anywhere in any league, not what you would expect from two heavyweights.
The second half started about the same, but again England made a defensive mistake and Maguire gifted a penalty to the Germans. After this goal England looked deflated. But the defining moment of the game came on the 66 minute when Southgate sent in Saka and Mount. They didn't have a minute when another Maguire mistake led to the German's second, very good goal by Havertz. So that looked like it, the same as usual England losing to the Germans, again.
But like I said Saka and Mount would make the difference, they started driving the German defense wild, along with James I must say, and Shaw scored one, Mount scored a beautiful goal and Kane scored a penalty. Incredible, England had turned things around. OK, then Pope made a big mistake and Havertz scored the final goal to make it 3-3, but even in the final seconds Saka nearly scored the winner, Ter Stegen cleared it with his finger nails.
Now why am I excited about this game if it meant nothing? Well at last I saw that these two teams have it in them to go far in Qatar, both are contenders and both can make it to the end. There are some questions left, like why Maguire? Why a fragile German defense? But these are questions that Southgate and Flick have to find answers to. For us football fans all that is left is about 30 minutes of excellent football.
