Introduction to Fantasy Premier League (FPL)

FPL is one of the most popular Fantasy Sports games available with over 8,000,000 players globally.

You compete against all other players in the Global League, a Country League, a Team Fans League and any min-leagues that you have created or joined (in our case, using League Code TBC or TBC - the different league codes are explained later as there are 2 different league types available).

Squad Selection

You start with a budget of £100m from which, you need to select 2 Goalkeepers, 5 Defenders, 5 Midfielders and 3 Forwards with a maximum of 3 players from each team.

Match Selection

Every Gameweek (GW), you have to select 11 players from your squad which must include at least 1 Goalkeeper, 3 Defenders and 1 Forward. The remaining players are placed on your bench and the order in which they are placed, is the order that they will come on if any of your starting 11 do not play (maintaining the minimum player positions mentioned).

From your 11 players, you choose a captain and vice-captain. The captain will score you double points and if your captain does not play, your vice-captain will score double points. If your vice-captain does not play, you will miss out on double points.

Transfers

You get 1 free transfer every week which if you don't use, will carry over to the following gameweek (up to a maximum of 2 free transfers). Any additional transfers will cost you 4 points each.

There is a Gameweek Deadline each week before which you have to have made any transfers you wish to make and select your team.

Price Changes

Keep an eye on player prices as these change throughout the season and an increased or decreased value can benefit or hinder your plans.

If one of your players increases in value and you decide to sell them (transfer them out), then you will gain 50% of that player's value increase (rounded down). For example, if you bought Mo Salah for £12.0m and sold him for £12.3m, he has increased by £0.3m. This is halved to £0.15m and rounded down to £0.1m so you would get £12.1m.

If one of your players decreases in value and you decide to transfer them out, you'll lose whatever price change has occurred. For example, buying Mo Salah for £12.0m and selling him for £11.8m will get you £11.8m.

Wildcards and Chips

You receive 2 wildcards each season, 1 at the beginning of the game and 1 half way through. This will allow you to make unlimited transfers in whichever gameweek you choose to play it.

You will also receive a Bench Boost, Free Hit and Triple Captain chip which you can only use once throughout the season.

The Bench Boost means your whole squad of 15 will get you points for the given gameweek.

The Free Hit allows you to choose any players for 1 gameweek only (within the aforementioned rules), returning your squad to how it was for the following gameweek.

The Triple Captain means your captain selection scores 3 times the number of points that they would have done.

The intricacies of these points scoring system are available from FPL's website as they're far too complex to explain here!

League Types

The 2 league types available are "Standard / Classic League" (code btbsd0) and "head-to-head League" (code 0l8zfe).

The standard league accumulates your points score each gameweek and the player with the most points wins!

The head-to-head league places 2 teams against each other and the team with the highest score gets 3 points with a draw earning each team 1 point.

Now there are complexities to this and players spend a huge amount of time strategising.
