Derrick Rose has been through it all, so many of us will be pleased of his recent form for Detroit. So far this season his posted 18.1 points, 5.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 26 minutes per game.
He showed us last season of a mini-resurgence in Minnesota shooting a career best .370 from beyond the arc. And who can forget, his emotional career high 50-point game against the Utah Jazz in October 2018.
LeBron James summed it up best about ‘that’ game. “To have the battles and battles with his injuries, to be able to come back … I think that’s unbelievable,” James said of Rose.
“Any kid that’s going through anything in life about adversity and triumph and trying to just get over the hump, you can look at that performance by Derrick Rose tonight”
The Pistons’ will appreciate his good form, and reportedly rejected a deadline deal from the Lakers for Alex Caruso and draft compensation, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Detroit was reportedly after a lottery first-round pick in exchange for Rose, which teams considered too high likely because his wretched injury history.
Rose was announced as one of eight participants in the skills competition to take place in front of his Chicago hometown crowd at the United Center but he pulled out due to injury.
In late February he caught fire against the Suns scoring 31 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 assists, shooting 15-of-24 in the process.
Not even a couple days later he suffered a right ankle injury against the Kings. He’s been out ever since, and as we enter the league’s suspension following the Coronavirus outbreak we’ll have to see if he can add to his solid year.
Rose is into the first year of a two-year $15 million deal which ends next year, and it’ll be interesting to see what the Pistons decide to do next year.
Some will have wished the Pistons traded Rose to the Lakers and cashed him in. Wishful either for Rose to have a genuine shot of winning a championship or because possible injuries may plummet his value.
Not offloading D-Rose is even more confusing by the fact that if he plays too well, he may screw up the Pistons’ ‘tank’.
And a drop in form just means that his trade value will drop meaning if they do decide to cash in on him, he’s value would have dropped.
Factor in his injury history, the Pistons in rebuild mode and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense keeping him.
But Rose “was born to do this sh*t”, as he said in his own words late last year, after hitting a game winner against New Orleans.
As long as he can stay healthy he’ll continue to close out games for Detroit and continue his career resurgence.
Only time will tell whether the Pistons made the right move. After all the injuries and setbacks, it’s good to be able to sit back and appreciate what he is capable of.
For Pistons’ fans, they’ll know they’re always getting 110% from him and in Derrick Rose’s very own words, ““I work my ass off, bro.”
