Exactly 62 years ago, on March 11, 1959, just 20 months old, Eugenia Chandris, daughter of Greek shipowner Dimitris Chandris, launched the cargo ship "Miss Chandris" built by William Doxford & Sons.
Eugenia is believed to be the youngest person ever to launch a ship for a British shipbuilding and marine engineering company.
William Doxford founded the company in 1840. After the death of William Doxford in 1882, the company was managed by his four sons. The company was bought by the Northumberland Shipbuilding Company in 1918. In 1972 Court Line took her over and renamed her Sunderland Shipbuild.
In the 1970s, a new universal palaeon yard was built that could house two ships of up to 30,000 tons side by side. The steel went in at one end, and the completed ship left with engines and sometimes machinery attached at the other end.
However, the last ship built on Palion sailed out of the yard in 1989 and it was later closed as a shipyard. The old shipyard is now occupied by Palian Engineering Limited.
What happened to little Eugenia….. Well, she was busy!
Eugenia Chandris started as an intern in the hospitality industry and later worked in her family's travel and hospitality business. In 1985, she wrote The Venereal Syndrome, an exploration of the female body from multiple perspectives: medical, anthropological, physiological, and holistic. One of the first books to discover why so many women put fat on their lower half. She has appeared on numerous radio and television programs including The Morning Show with Regis Philbin. She is also the author of several articles on travel in London and the Greek language. In 1987, she moved to Greece and worked at GRT for 2 years as a consultant on international joint events. Then, after returning to the hospitality industry, she set up her own television production company. She is Vice President of Chandris Hotels and completed the group's last 5-star property in Thessaloniki, Greece in 2010. She is the British President of the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce. She has a 16-year-old, one boy and 2 girls, and develops real estate in Athens with monthly trips to London, Corfu and Mykonos. She also visits New York frequently.
