What happened to Ristar? - Sega's forgotten star

Sega was one of the flagship companies in the 1990s thanks to its incredible consoles and video games that brought relevant ideas to the industry. Like every video game company of yesteryear has had its mascot that has lasted many years, the charismatic blue hedgehog Sonic, however, before the existence of this character they had other ideas in mind.

To tackle the Nintendo plumber, Sega commissioned a group of designers to create a mascot. They would start their design based on an echidna (a sketch that would be used for Knuckles) and another one on a rabbit, which had the ability to stretch its ears, this last idea would become a long-armed star called Feel.

Feel was one of the nominees to become Sega's mascot, but the blue hedgehog design fit the company perfectly, leaving Sonic as the new mascot. But the project Feel was not forgotten, this character had certain modifications in its design besides its name, changing it to Dextar and finally it would stay as we know it the players of long ago, Ristar.

In February 1995 this character would make his debut in a video game with the same name, Ristar, released for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive and Game Gear. Developed by the same team that programmed the video game Sonic (Team Sonic), for such reasons we will see certain similarities with respect to the art used in the blue hedgehog, but its gameplay in totally different.

Ristar has the ability to stretch his arms, this allows him to grab his enemies and ram his head against them, he doesn't have much ability to jump, but thanks to his main skill he can easily climb or hang himself to turn and be able to grab a super speed to take off and reach great heights.

This video game in spite of not being as successful as Sonic, became an excellent platform title, which contains all the necessary elements to keep the player in front of the TV, among the most remarkable we can find the level designs, an excellent use of colors, incredible animations, unique bosses and a high quality music.

It has been more than 25 years since its launch and Sega has never released a sequel to Ristar, because it focused more on the company's mascot. However, they have not forgotten this charismatic character, including him as unlockable content in the Sonic Mega Collection Plus and Sonic Mega Collection video games, which were released for different consoles.

Ristar is a very underrated videogame that has been forgotten by most gamers in the past, when it was overshadowed by other games it became a bit apart in popularity, however, it is one of the most outstanding platform videogames of the Sega Genesis.

Sega was going in too many directions when Ristar came around. Had they not been trying to get the Sega Channel going, 32X off the ground, planning the Saturn, and still attempting to keep the Genesis and Sega CD going, maybe they could have seen value in Ristar.

Sadly, not one third party picked it up either.
