Streets of Rage 4 Preview

Streets of Rage 4 has just launched on Steam, Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. For those that do not know, this is the official sequel to the classic Sega franchise. The last time we officially saw a Streets of Rage entry was on the Sega Genesis console. That was back in mid-1994 for those not keeping score. This is literally a love letter to the fans of the 16-bit games.

Story matters

Streets of Rage 4 takes place about 10 years after Streets of Rage 3. There we saw the fall of Mr. X and peace seemingly returning to Wood Oak City. Unknown to everyone, Mr. X’s children, the Y Twins, rise to power in the shadows.

Blaze Fielding finds out about the developing situation and is none too happy about it. In an effort to stop the Y Twins before they become more powerful than their father, she calls in some help. Axel Stone and Adam Hunter answer the call. Hunter brings along his daughter, Cherry Hunter. Accompanying them is an apprentice of Dr. Zan who flipped on Mr. X in SoR 3. As you play you can potentially unlock other, familiar, characters to help in your fight.

Streets of Rage 4 was in good hands

Dotemu published, and Lizardcube with Guard Crush Games co-developed, Streets of Rage 4. Usually when this many companies are involved; the result is less than stellar. I will be holding off that judgement for the review. SoR 4 uses a modified version of the same engine from Streets of Fury for those wanting to know.

Brawler fans just go ahead and grab SoR 4. If it has been awhile since you have played a brawler, be prepared, there are cheap enemies. Just like back in the day. There may be some throw your controller moments too.

I loved the game at genesis and will definitely buy it.

If you head over to Humble Bundle you can get it for about $5 less than it is on Steam right now.
