Pink Flamingoes

Did you know that Chile has its own species of flamingos? Chilean flamingoes can be found in the area from Ecuador to Uruguay although the biggest colonies may be observed in the northern part of the Atacama desert and Peru. It's not easy to find them as the species is close to extinction. It's mostly because of the water pollution, which causes the losing natural habitats of that birds. It's quite significant to mention that they lay only one egg per year, and it takes two years until the young bird becomes independent from their parents. The dynamics of reproduction are rather slow.

An interesting fact is that flamingoes create kind of "kindergartens" for young birds. After a few months when the mother stops breeding the child but when it's not totally independent yet, it groups with other young birds from the colony and one or two adult birds take care of all of them.

This distinguishes, pink creatures love hot areas and salty lakes, but they are present on the Oceanic coast too. They eat flies, shrimps, and other small creatures, migrating dynamically from one place to another. Migration is absolutely necessary as the colonies of that birds can count even a few thousand birds - soon after arriving there are food shortages in the lake and the hunger cause the need to move instantly.

Photos presented in this publication were taken by me in 2018 on the Atacama desert.
