This weeks class simply reminded me of the good old days when I was a child. Traditional games were the in things and we couldn’t just wait to get to them whenever we came back from school.

The traditional came seems to be almost the same everywhere. Let’s dig in and have some fun.

What is the name of the traditional game you selected? In your own words, explain how it is played.

Tehila seems to be expectant everytime Aunty shows up. Today we had some fun playing traditional games.

Game 1: Human wheelbarrow:

We played this by having my niece bend in a sqauttting position with her two hands on the floor for support while. Her palms are spread out openly on the floor while I carried up her legs with my hands and she began to move forward with her palms while I followed.

It just like replicating the wheelbarrow but this time around by humans. She got to a particular marked out point and turned back to where we started.

Next was my turn, we repeated the same process with her carrying me up on my legs while I walked with my palm. I must say that she is stronger than I expected. She was able to carry me for a while.

Game 2: Blind man's bluff

I blinded folded her and was standing around while she kept trying to catch me. It was so much fun watching her grope around while trying to catch me.

When she finished, it was my turn to blindfolded and we repeated the same game.

I thought it would have been easy for me to catch her but she was very elusive. We ended up not catching each other.

Game 3: Sack race:

This reminded me of my days in the primary school.

We both got into a sac and started taking a leap towards the end point. We turned again and headed back to our starting point. It was so much fun.

Game 4: Hide and seek:

I closed my eyes and counted from 1-5 while Tehila went to hide. When I Opened my eyes, I had to go look for her. I thought it was going to be easy to find her, I had to search for a while before I found her.

I finally found her and I saw myself squealing with delight and she too. It was a profound moment as I carried her up in triumph. She was so excited.

What are its rules? Did you make any changes to the rules to suit you?
  • For the human wheel barrow, I had to ask her to ensure she gets to the point we marked before turning and she has to ensure her palms are open and well spread on the floor to avoid injuring herself. When it was my turn to be carried, I told her to be free to stop when she feels she can’t go further and we were good.

  • For the sack race we had to leap instead on running inside the sac in that way it was easy to propel further. She really had enough energy, I had to take a little caution on her not to over jump to avoid injuries through fall.

  • The hide and sick game, we had a very big compound so I had to give boundaries to how far she could go, if I didn’t, she may be tempted to go too far away with the type of energy she was exuding. The compound where we were playing was on a busy highway and I didn’t want her running into the road all because she was trying to hide, so I had to give her boundaries.

Of the characteristics of the traditional games we have discussed, which ones do you think are present in the traditional game you chose?

All the games we discussed and the ones we practiced had the same characteristics. The characteristics common in the games are;

  • We were able to play them freely where we wanted and we used our compound space.
  • They encouraged friendship and cooperation between me and my niece and this made it fun.
  • They involved movements and speaking.
  • We didn’t use complicated materials but simply two sacs, and a blindfold.
  • The rules we used were simple for us to understand.
  • We adapted to the games in respect to our environment.
Did the children have fun? Share your experience playing this traditional game with them. Feel free to tell us about the best moments you had during the activity.

Yes, she had so much fun and not just her, I had fun too. There was so much laughter and smiles and giggles. I think my niece is a playing mistress as she kept saying this is fun. This is fun, this is fun. I like it. Hahaha. I was glad she enjoyed herself.

I must say that her energy is something else. I was trying hard to match it and she was so cooperative all the way. She was even asking me if we are going to do more tomorrow. Hahahaha.

Share videos or photos of you doing the activity. Remember that you and the child(ren) must appear in the photos.
