Problems of Agricultural Development in West Africa.

  1. Land tenure system- the land tenure is mainly based on family and commerical control.
    a.it does not encourage planting of permanent crops.
    b. It is characterized by litigation and misunderstanding.
    c. Land cannot be pladged ,sold or used as collateral by an individual.

    Solution

  • crops rotation should be practice by farmers.
  • farmers should form co-operative societies for the farm Land.
  1. Inadequate finence-farmers are poor and do not have the capital to production expecially money to purchase.
    -.land and Agricultural tools and mechinery.
  • improve seeds, fertilizer and other chemical.

Solution

  • Agricultural bank should make loans available to farmers.
  • farmers should form co-operative societies for easy procurement of loan.

3 .Poor transportation network-
-The members of vehicle are inadequate because of high cost of vehicle, mechinery and spare parts.

  • most farms in rural areas are not linked to eventually leads to wastapes of food.

Solution

  • construction of new feeder need to open up the nail area.
  • provision of vehicle ,boats and trains to facilitate.
  1. Inadequate basic Amerities-
    a. There is lack of storage and processing facilities for farm produce.
    b.there is also lack of recreation facilities in roral areas.

Solution
a.Provision on basic amerities like electricity and drimeling water ,healk-care center in roral areas.
b.establishaent of dems to facilitate origation agriculture in roral areas.

Poor marketing system-
a. There are no organized marketing channels for farm produce.
b.the nagative activity of middle men worsen the marketing of produce .

Solution.

  • Government should be excess produce from farmers.
  • the activities of middlemen who produce at cheaper rates and sell at higher price should be checked.

Problem of pest and Disease-

Pest and disease attacks leads to losses in quantity of produce.in this way they reduced the income of farmers and also increase in the cost of production through cost of purchasing pesticides.

Solution

  • chemical used in the control of pest and disease should be supplied at rates.

Farmers should form co-operative societies to enable them to pool theri resources together and purchased farm implement and machine.
